The Pengui-dozer:

It came out a bit like just a penguin riding a bulldozer, and not really a merging of animal and machine. Part of it is due to the feet resting on the scoop, but I think the feet add too much to the character to remove them. I hope that's ok. Anyhow, this was good fun! Thanks guys,

I also picked through the mesh merging verts and optimizing, saving me enough triangles to give him a hat and a north-pole prop.
great stuff!

I was about to suggest the same thing.
Great entry and good luck.

Possible mini touchup : you may want to edit the eye planes normals so that they get shaded with the same value - just by making the normals point straight forward. It *might* make the eyes less flat and also more cartoony.
This is really adorable btw.

It looks like there's a lot of wasted triangles on his feet that could have been spent else where. I used the wireframe shot you posted in your final submit post.
Switching the feet to be the shovel was a definite increase in awesomeness! I like the smoke too, oddly enough...
