Troubles after reformattng

Hey, I just reformatted my computer and after reinstalling windows I get an error on a black screen that reads "Windows Could Not Start Because of a Computer Disk Hardware Configuration Problem". I've looked up how to fix it, but so far nothing has helped, so I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem and knows how to fix it.

My exact procedure that lead up to the error: Boot from WinXP Home disk,

I then hit enter to enter Windows XP setup and deleted both of my partitions and created a single new one (didn't need two paritions anymore because I had extra harddrives).

Then I went through the steps to install windows on the new parition.

When I restarted from the hard drive it gave me the error above. Since then I have tried to format the drive in the repair console and reinstall windows on it it again, same error.

I have since tried a few different things, in the repair console I tried expanding the ntoskrnl files from d: to c:, tried repairing the bootcfg, etc...

My hardware setup is a 160gig SATA hdd and an Asus A8N-SLI Premium mother board.

If anyone can help with this at all it'd be great, cause I'd really like to get my computer back up and running.

Thanks a bunch. :P

(Also, I tried to insert floppy with the Sata drives on one of the attempts after the first screw up. However when I tried to install it didn't verify that the drivers were properly installed or not. I assume they were and that I likely didn't need to do this in the first place because windows found the harddrive from the start, but I suppose it could have something to do with it?)

oh my...from the load of things you did...when I had an issue similar to that I downloaded the utility files required to run the system and it worked when I loaded it with a CD (Mine had no floppy.)

I guess one option would be changing your boot options to the other drive.

When you said you tried repairing the bootcfg, what exactly did you do? Did you try fixmbr or the more extreme fixboot c: ?
The install of XP SHOULD have taken care of the boot sector, but maybe it's messed up.

Pete - I don't have another drive to change the boot options to as far as I know... :S

notman, in the repair console I typed in bootcfg /rebuild. I pretty much actually just did whatever this page said to. None of it seemed to work. should I try the fixmbr or fixboot commands as well? And yea, I'd sort of thought reinstalling xp should fix it, but it doesnt seem to have done a damn thing. frown.gif

    Thanks for the help guys.

yeah, give the fixmbr and fixboot a chance. They shouldn't hurt anything (unless you're dual booting).

Yep second that option...that's also what I did when I had the issue but forgot to mention.

Or you could just call your technician if it was custom built...doubt it though.

Awesome, I'll give that a shot when I get home tonight, thanks guys.

And yea, problem is that it was custom built and I'm pretty much the technician in question. :S If the fixmbr and fixboot don't work I'll give the place I bought most of the parts at a call though.

    Thanks again guys. smile.gif

Just that you know unless there's no other way (Which I guess in this case...) you can prolly just go with fixmbr command.

Fixboot might make it worse I heard but worth a try.
