Here is a texture WIP Im about an hour into. Still needs decay and grime around the cap, wear n tear on the edges, especially the bottom of the barrel. Another dirt layer along the base with some stronger shadows. More dirt over the entire surface. The blue paint might be a little too saturated. What do you guys think? And I think I might add some more ooze from the top.
Here is a fast software render of the texture applied to the barrel.
Thanks for taking a look.

A couple of other things:
Make some slashes with rust in them.
More rust on top and top on the extruding edges, water collects on these surfaces. Less rust under the edges, since they are "protected" a bit from the weather by the top of the edge.
Make the rust run a bit along the side where water picks up the rust spreads it downwards, just go in with a soft redish brush.
Thanks guys.
Thanks for your input
IDK, why people think we don't have like every texture package under the sun.
Though, at least you can photomanipulate when needed good show.
EDIT:
If you truely want to get better and work hard like we usually do, granted you may see some users using photos for extra depth though, they don't abuse one or numerous sources and call it a texture. This is only usually done by pro's that are under tight time restrictions and even then they at least paint some bits here and there. The real trick is to make it look like you didn't use a photo but that's another task in itself.
It's a major part of the job these days and a huge time saver if you learn to do it properly.
If he used that source you posted, then good job on mixing it.
As far as the barrel texture goes, it's overkill, too many shadows and noise. Makes it hard to read.
In most cases a decent photo source or two combined should be enough for a great barrel texture. Add some dust/dirt at the bottom, some fluid damage around the top, done.
Anything between 10-20 mins depending of details would be good.
Please look closer, and I believe someone as experienced as yourself will be able to tell.
Though your input is appreciated it was a little insulting.
Thanks though.
Thanks for the post.
Thanks illusions.
Mind:
My comments may have been on the harsh side but I thought that was why people posted and asked for C&C(?).
Anywayz, all I was saying is what Illusions is explaining that it looks close to slapped on without noticeable effort. I know photosources are used now widely throughout the industry I just never seen any as obvious as yours.
Everyone's doing the BigSandwichGames art-test it seems lol, hope they find someone. Nice to see an up an coming studio get some much attention, Good luck!
No crying in polycount, little boys feelings got hurt.
Man up...
Thanks slugger
Ive never seen someone make so many uneducated assumptions. You win.

And while I'm about it, the barrel looks like one piece of metal. There's no definition around the lid that suggests it's either ever been removed or even exists - looks like it was welded in place and painted over, and the paint has somehow worn and rusted uniformly over the lip. This is where you really do want to cut up your photsource, just a different layer with different arrangements of weathering, with a hard edge defined around the different pieces of metal will do you better here
I've been working with m1ND for a little over a year now, while he's been going to school to learn 3d. As a working model texture artist, as well as a fine artist, I've been mentoring him through both his soft skills and his technical skills.
First off, a big thanks to all the constructive criticism from Sectaurs, Cubik, gamedev, danr, Strangefate, and Illusions, good observations all, and valid points to be made, m1ND and I have discussed them and recognize the validity of them all.
The barrel is a piece that I suggested, as it's related directly to a larger project he's doing, and is a good piece to cut his high poly teeth on. I've never heard of Big Sandwich games, but having worked in this business for some time now myself, I've seen all manner of small "self contained" objects common to gameplay used as a studio test, favourites being Crates, Ammunition Boxes, Telephone booths, Barrels, and Toilets. . . so I don't know where $!nz's comment on that is coming from. . .
Which brings me to the motivation for my post, normally I don't like to get on "the forums", as I don't have that kind of time, BUT, while speaking to m1ND about the Issue with the drop shadow on the chipped paint specifically (a point that is completely valid, I personally would leave a differentiation around the chipped areas simply to enhance the detail, and difference in tone between the two surfaces, both with and without a normal, but you are correct gamedev, i'd turn down the opacity on that level, as it is too dark the way it is now.)
YOU "$!nz" are pretty much exactly what's wrong with forums and the internet, the annonymity that you are guaranteed behind your keyboard with your pants around your ankles, slowly going blind, allows you to digitally beat your chest like a gorilla and pretend that you're more than you really are. . . isn't it fun to rip on people you don't know online?, I know that I'm enjoying myself right now.
-FIRST, YOU SAY, that you "IDK" why people think we don't have like every texture package under the sun. . .
I SAY- on an unrelated note, how hard is it to type "I Don't Know" a phrase I'm fairly certain that you use more than a little bit after checking out your work, oh yeah buddy, I had a good old look at what YOU do, and wow, let me just say, that anyone who's reading your crits on this post should have a look at the hack job gear that you churn out. But again, I digress (see it IS fun to tear jackasses on the internet to shreds) you mentioned that you "have every texture package under the sun, and then turn straight around, and (wrongly) accuse another artist of pasting a piece that happens to have the same paint colour (not even a straight up match), that YOU have, and that YOU are framilliar enough with, that you can call it up from your supposedly massive collection (because you're so hard core right?) of stolen stock textures... good call all star, you PRETTY MUCH ADMITTED, that YOU slap on the old photos and call it a meal, bravo, you're like a baby dick at a porn star convention). You then go on to say that "If you truely want to get better and work hard like we usually do", I'm sorry what? Dude, I just checked out your gear, and the body of work that you've ammassed as your "best foot forward" your "representation of myself" to get a job, is weak at best, how's that 12 pixel airbrush paintover of thieved textures treating you these days?, or your frogs that you're so uber proud of, but didn't even model, or uv? . . .
wow, dude, seriously, you're clearly an artistic force to be reckoned with. At the end of this post, you state "This is only usually done by pro's that are under tight time restrictions and even then they at least paint some bits here and there." . . . Are you lumping yourself in with "pro's", when you work from Home(your mom's house? or is it her basement suite), at what appears to be a very and sporadic rate for remote companies,
doing sub par work? . . . my my my, you are a pro indeed aren't you, do you use all of your textures from that massive library of yours to be amazing? or is it just sheer brilliance that came up with your fuzzy 256 cube airbrushed "keep it in the lines at colouring time" textures?
-SECOND, when people point out that you're a bit ridiculous, you post AGAIN, because you sure couldn't get it all down in the first go at it. but the keyboard was sticky and you needed to give it a thorough wipe down, where oh where did you leave your windex. . .
YOU SAID- "My comments may have been on the harsh side but I thought that was why people posted and asked for C&C(?)."
CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and comments are a whole lot better than being a smarmy twat and looking for someone to prop yourself up against so you can feel better about your sad little life, I really do invite anyone and everyone to have a looky loo at your stuff, and we'll see just how much you should be throwing rocks in your tiny glass house. If you need to rip on someone's work in progress, that's you know. . not done, as in unfinished, and STILL clearly better than your weak finished work, that looks like paint by numbers, then you ought to look into a better way to feel better about yourself, try leaving the house once in a while, or even taking a class or thirty so that maybe some day you'll be in a position where you deserve to offer your opinion, but you sir, "ain't there yet". my oh my, how the time flies, see? I told you it was fun ripping on people on the internet.
I'd like to mention that m1ND DOES indeed need to do more work on this, he knows it, it's a work in progress, the top of the barrel wasn't finished, he simply copied the paint layer and placed it there as a placeholder, rather than leave it grey, that's the idea behind a work in progress, it's still in progress. If you look at the piece, the rust underneath the paint on the top is different than the rust on the sides, as someone who's seen the PSD, that's been generated using multiple layers of rust, dirt, and steel, worn through, and painted into individually, on top of that is a FLAT BLUE layer of paint, strictly click fill, blue, and then chewed away with a selection of erasers, on top of that there is treatement for the edges of the paint, he was going for a thick, chunky, painted, and repainted look, and then there's a multitude of layers with surface detail for the paint itself, both hand painted and phot sourced, after which there's barrel details (unfinished) and more grime, one thing that "WE" pro's know, is that if you want something to look good, make it dirty. . . write that down $!nz, maybe you'll paint a decent texture someday.
sorry to anyone else who's posting here, your comments have been great, but a big thank you to $!nz for proving once again, that thanks to the internet, he can remain anonymous, but thanks only to himself, he has proven that the idiots will always rise to the bottom.
One final time, I'd really encourage you all to have a good hard look at this little fellers work,
http://fourthewin.wordpress.com/
as he has no business talking down to anyone. . .
Have a great day sweetheart,
watching you make a fool of yourself-

Down with barrels! Ban this sick filth! Why won't anyone think of the children?
P.S - its a fucking barrel ! for christ sake ! its made in like 1 hour if that much !
m1ND, feel free to start a new thread with updated work if you want. If anyone tries to pick this mudslinging up again I will see about getting them banned.
Cheers!
