some kind of thin perforated metal foil might do the trick (like they use in gorrillaz concerts) and allow for less powerful motors. maybe thats unsuitable at this scale though

reminds me of a game console I had back in the 80s that had rotating mirrors inside that were used to cast vector graphics..it was a little 'semi portable' kind of console...anyone know what its called?

Neat, but faking vertical paralax through camera tracking seems absolutely useless to me. A 3d display for only one viewer? Who has to have a sensor or whatnot on him? I'd just dump that feature and focus on the rest of it.
