Been posting this in waywo, would appreciate some more in depth crits/suggestions. Wordy rambly version below image.
I'm trying to round out my skillset a bit, to try and see about getting some contract work as a general or prop artist. I figured it'd be good for my portfolio to have a few examples of nextgen weapon modeling, so I started on this. It's 4700 tris, just about, and using 512x1024 maps for diffuse/normal/specular. Not set on the grip at all (could use suggestions of what to do on it,) not done detailing the metal, gonna add stamping/text/etc, blahblahblah. I think it's a steyr Mannlicher 1901, but not sure about my ref.

The texture looks quite nice. A little bland and not much going on, i dont know if that's how the real gun is or not, but if there is any stamping on it (as you said) putting that into the normal map especially would spice things up a bit.
I actually like the handle (from waht I can see). The render isn't the greatest :-\ having the guns overlapping like that makes it really hard to see details when they are casting shadows on one another.
Looking good though.
Personal taste aside, there are a few areas that could be improved. The scratches on the barrel are very random and really don't need to be there, otherwise the metal texture is nice.
the grip is a little different than you have, though I'm sure there were alternate grips, but all the ones I've seen were like this lovely photo from wikipedia:

otherwise looking nice. I'm not up on current gen weapon polycounts, but nearly 5k seems a little much for a pistol, I would look into trimming it down a bit personally.
Flewda sorry about the overlapping. Hopefully with both better lit, in this picture, it won't be quite as much of an issue.
Sandbag, yeah, I noticed that grip on some pictures, but others used a wooden grip. I figured it wouldn't hurt to take a liberty.
Anyway, update. Would still really appreciate c&c:
Hehe, nice job, looks wonderful
Looks cool, that's a lot of polies though
Only thing I could suggest, is to add some gun metal stains and tarnish, to both the diffuse and spec. Even looking at that wikipedia image, you can see that it's got some green, red, brown and blue in the metal.
Thanks Vassago, I hadn't quite gotten around to finishing up the metals yet, but there's a little more variation now.
also, the part where the screw enters the wood. Isn't there something that normally surrounds the screw's entry-point to prevent the wood from damaging? i'm not quite sure, but i think so.
unless of course ur working off of ref images.
no crits - looks like a gun to me. The model specs seem high, but that's your call to make.
am I missing the point of having two of them in every screenshot? are they at least mirrored so we're seeing both sides?

I figured a slight change in angle would show the specular map better, and be easier to look at then a turnaround or something. Any crits on the model/texture itself?
(indian boy, thanks. I'll check about the screw's seating. Wires are nothing special, just a simple midpoly weapon model http://i3.tinypic.com/63vo6zd.jpg)
Maybe it's supposed to be like that, if it is ignore me. I dunno crap about guns. Just looks a bit odd to me.
What bothers me is that I dunno why is the little part behind the barrel so bright and purplish?
edit: also the wood dosent really read very well, maybe a nice clear wood pattern there would help, or adding in the fine detail from the reference posted above.
@ Flagaan Hehe, being in the defence force I have one in my room. I'm holding it right now in fact Anyway, if you want the shape, I believe you can buy some pretty realistic bb gun versions of the net for like US$30 or something ridiculous. Me and some buddies were thinking about buying them and running around with them, but since it would be mighty confusing to higher ranks, we decided against it...
Would have been a shitload of fun though.
