It's important to clarify that when sites say "unlimited bandwidth" and you're paying a few bucks a month, it's not actually true. It'll probably be more than you'll ever need, but it's not unlimited. Every host has Terms of Service that allow them to cut off your service if you use too much of their resources, especially with hosts that used shared servers.
sounds like I'll have to sign up a new account with them to get that promo, oh well, thanks for the code
Since you're already a customer, they will kick you if they find out. Not sure if you care since you're planning on switching anyway. I did some searching after I saw this post since I use DH and wanted to save some cash.
Dreamhost is the bomb. We're using it at the moment and hosting two sites, a subversion and team-storage/ftp system on there. Can't remember the deal ew got when we signed up, but we have unlimited bandwidth, storage space and we got a free .com + .co.uk domain
You can do SVNs on them? Hmm... Might get one a bit earlier than I planned then.
That would be awesome if you could. Not sure when exactly I'll be getting my domain but I need to sort out a portfolio site sometime and I've been looking for a better SVN than the one I currently use.
Looks like every standard hosting account gets SVN. I created another discount code, for anyone who might already have a domain name:
GREENTOOTH
One year hosting will cost you - $32.40 (was $119.40)
Two year hosting will cost you - $127.80 (was $214.80)
So your saving yourself $87. You'll get all the features, just like Jesse's code. But this is for people who don't need, or want to pay that little bit extra for the domain name. You can buy domain names really cheap elsewhere.
Thanks! What would I get with that other than the unlimited SVN you mentioned earlier? I'm not too familiar with hosting.
Also you said it doesn't come with a domain. I don't necessarily need one right now, but if I bought that right now for the SVN, would I be able to upgrade my account later or buy the domain from them and keep it on that same account?
Hey Jesse do you know if this is still viable :P I don't mean to be a bother, but i'll be setting up my portfolio site soon, so i can whore myself out at a conference coming up May 1st for college.
It should still be viable, but dreamhost has been really shitty lately. I really never had any problems in the 6 years I've used them, but the last month or so they've had some major issues and downtime. Might want to wait 'til they get the problems resolved.
Yeah, they're doing upgrades right now, which means downtime. My site just came back up, so hopefully yours will soon if it hasn't already. Sucks for people that use DH from across the globe as it's probably middle of the day for you guys.
I'm mostly having trouble with email. There's been a long downtime recently regarding webmail. But that's really the first time. In general I've been very satisfied the last years
Sorry for bringing this thread back out of the depths.
But I've been looking into web hosting and I'm curious if this promo discount still works? Does anyone still use Dreamhost for web hosting? Any issues? Or what service would you recommend?
I use dreamhost, but i think about switching, or at least expanding the license to get root access for our coders.
However dreamhost is great, unlimited space and unlimited traffic.
500MB @ hole in the wall? Okay if it is just for portfolio this might be enough, but usually one of our projects has a lot of raw data (we're using SVN so all iterations of a file are saved as well). I just need a ton of space we can use to back up our projects. Dreamhost is great for this - tho svn tends to slow at times.
I'd use Google Drive, Dropbox, or some other online backup and file sharing service for large projects.
You can't find a better and cheaper site for a simple portfolio with full control over your site than hole in the wall. I barely use any of the storage space anyway. It's easy and cheap to expand it if I ever need to.
sorry ro derail the thread, but dropbox and google drive just don't have enough space or it costs a fortune, our last project had around 200GB raw data from over 16 artists - at dropbox that would be 15x16=240 a month. for a service that you can get for 9 dollar at dreamhost for all users together.

I've been using that for almost 2 years, Karina (the person who manages it) is awesome.
Sure does...
http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/ if you ever want to check why it's not working.
Shouldnt do stuff like that when you've just woken up

Thanks.
I have a referral code linked for hole in the wall hosting for $10 a year. I prefer them to dream host.
