Raytracing bump map

Does anyone know how to go about setting up a Raytrace material in Max to render with a bump map? I've followed Max's documentation which simply states that all I need to do is place a bump map in the bump slot, which I did and achieved NOT sexy results. There's no bump showing up on the material in the editor and it doesn't render either. Needless to say, I am sad.
