First i think u should put the checker on the whole model, 'cos I have a feeling that pulpit is a but stretched in few places. IMO u should create all uv and place them before u start painting textures or lights or whatever.
U can bake using render to texture in rendering panel. But i can;t tell u exactly options, I don't have max atm. I'll check and post when I came back to home.
Keep it up, going pretty nicely.
