Yup Peris I agree! It definately needs to be chunkier. I think I will go on testing materials and such before actually deciding on a design.
At least I've got the name and color now!
I've got a few others I want to try stuff with, esp one that was supposed to be a simple front floater thingie ala SWEpisode1 but that I will turn into a ship of its own - thus giving a simple, blockier look. Til then I'll go on practicing 2D material rendering with the other designs I have at hand.
These material studies are looking amazing, the 2d one too.
The latest glossy material is looking very sexy, even though it doesn't have that nice glow effect the first one had.
Hey Jaco they are all 2d :P Yeah the last one is less glowly/ghostly - Yet I feel it is more satisfactory as a potential carpaint. I thought the first one was looking too jelly-transparent. However the last one looks too much like ceramics with a layer of gloss on top... might need to look into that further.
Haha Jesse yeah, a friend passed me a few last year and I am now slowly going trough them - the shiny ball was obviously done by following Neville Page's. I thought that the Fzero challenge was a nice occasion to try the classic rendering tricks that are distilled in these discs. Also my table-mate at the office has a background in Industrial Aesthetics and is showing me how and where to place chrome horizon lines and stuff.
Teri that's an Intuos. I know I will get myself a Cintiq someday but I'd love to borrow/rent a tablet PC to see how these devices handle sketching programs. Being able to tilt the document to adjust to a natural arm movement is something I miss a lot with digital mediums.
Anyways, still looking for a design I like, no success so far! Maybe I'll go for the one with a blue racecar stripe.
Apparently I can't join that productdesignforum site? no matter what I do I get the login screen with a message saying "sorry we can't do that" I can't register or do anything
Yeah actually I think I'll keep it this size and give it a paintjob featuring stylized mammoths silhouettes emulating the Designers Republic style used in the Fzero series... Could be fun!

slight difference between fzero and wipeout but all is forgiven
Lowpoly and normalmap baking done, and halfway throught the texturing. I won't let the top hull like this and plan to weather it just like the bottom part - just wanted to test out the pattern and a possible color scheme.
wooow! beautiful work, I think the clean colours of the top hull give a nice contrast and make it look smoother and faster but I suppose a little battle wear wouldnt be bad.
What happened with the orange? A whole lot of colour study only to settle for a standard blue?
Overall though, it looks great! I don't mind the lo-res spoiler/fin at the back, but it is the only give away that it is a lo-poly model.
Looking forward to the final.
Well I kindof gave up with the orange as I felt it didn't match with the mammoth-like proportions of the model! As for the color studies it was mostly a mean to learn about carpaint behaviour, reflections aso - all these car design tricks really.
Yup Brice the glow effect behaved oddly, I tried messing with the G-buffer values but it didn't help. Sometimes it gets sorted correctly when I select everything at once, sometimes it doesn't, weird!
Agreed about the lowpoly arch... I might go back to itt later. The whole stands at 1316 atm, already sliiightly overbudget still!
Anyways!
And les maps :
Couldn't helm myself from whistling the FZero tune yesterday evening ha!
Hmmm I think I'll keep the scratches as is (caused by other vehicules smashing into it) but I might add a side 'ladder' on the hull to convey the sense of scale. Vroom!
rad fzero racer, pior. looks as if she hasn't been used in a while. hey, you should add some streaked smoke , grease, etc. around the damaged areas and stuff. maybe some space bugs splattered on the windshield.

Vailias I never hear of Burt Rutan before but after some research I think I see what you mean. Slick stuff!
Ged, I whish I did. Still there is a ton of good starter info to grab from the Robertson and Neville Page Gnomon DVDs.

Trying to learn the product rendering clich
Hawk and Ged it's just a dirty trick :

Woooosh!

Started with the lowpoly, hopefully I'll begin the texture work tonight. Wooosh!
GET OUT OF MEH WAI!!
Awesome design, pior.
Working on these and seeing all the awesome ideas people have make me really want a new solid fzero racing game to play

Almost there!
The arched fin gives away the lowpoly look a little too much - a few more divisions and the high poly illusion will be much more complete.
I'd like to see the blue a bit more saturated, but that is of course personal taste.
I like the designer republics like logo ala wipeoutXL colorscheme is cool too
Isn't there a problem with the bloom effect? seems like it appears even when it's occluded by the mesh
I think the big arch may benefit from some more vertex, the rest of the shape looks so perfect, it's a pity this element reminds it's a game asset.
okkk
whatever idea i had to join this comp it totally disappeared once pior clicked the button to create this thread..

About it's hugeness; You could just say that the driver is some kind of small, rodent-like alien or something. Problem solved!
