is this the way to go for painting 3d models or do you think its worth sticking with zapplink when it comes out for zbrush 3.
I need to finalise my workflow and need a prog thats good for projection painting.
TBH I did try Body paint and found it a little cumbersome.
opinions welcomed

CS3 has obj support natively, but I don't know if it does projections or just painting. Would be really nice to be able to do all texturing inside of photoshop... by which I mean photoshop and crazybump.

That whole CS3 obj support is a huge let down. It's meant for marketing type people so they can view their packaging in 3D. Or people who don't have access to a 3D app. It works just about as good as Max/Maya does as far as assigning a material to an obj. No 3D projection painting involved.

yeah I still can't do without photoshop, but I am starting to find it just as easy to work up my textures in 2d and just fix the seams in the proection painting app.
problem is every damn company I go to seems to want to force you to work in their method, so its hard to second guess what is going to be most popular.

bodypaint is the shit! You can edit PSDs in it. You can render a mesh with displacement maps applied to it and then paint on the render and have that information projected to the mesh. You can paint multiple maps with a single stroke. Plus you can use your photoshop filters in it. Its the shit. Nuff said. =]

We use it over at Turbine as well, as do the guys at Mythic from what i understand.
While i still have to get deep down into the software, it's already a huge help in seam cleanup, allowing you a lot of leeway when you're unwrapping.
The interface is a little weird at first, and their brush engine feels a little unrefined compared to the finely polished one in PS, but once you get past that its quite easy to use.
Dont expect to have it replace PS though. IMO you'll still want to do your high detail painting/cleanup there.

The brushes in Bodypaint do feel kind of wierd, but you can adjust the curves options assuming you are using a tablet. This and Painter are the only apps I use where I can make use of the tilt feature.
After awhile I find that I can get use to working with it even though it does not have the Photoshop feel.

    Go to Edit>Prefs

On the default options screen("common")go down to the checkbox that says "Graphic Tablet" which should be checked. Right next to it is something that says "Hi def Coordinates" or something like that. uncheck that.

    should be better now.

I still haven't figured out how to use the freaking program, not too many helpfiles or tutorials out there for it. frown.gif It's not the most easily intuitive UI ever created.

hmmh, i got to grips with it, but i didnt find it a huge help really. the brush was too "dirty" for my liking, especially since i usually paint softly several times to achieve my paint effects. i use ghostpainter to test my seams, i get vector-perfect UVs:

its also got the ability to select only the mesh objects selected in 3ds max.
theres some 3d paint functionality, but it generally sucks.

Kurv Studios has a very thorough training video for Bodypaint. I bought the video a while ago and it helped me ease into the program.

Here's a little picture tutorial that I had made a while ago on some of the settings and tools I use when I'm working on a texture for a model in Bodypaint. I also put little clips of what their Photoshop equivalents are, so you'd have a better understanding of what some things are laid out as.
