Windows Vista

So yeh. i was wondering how many of you use windows vista.
I recently formated my pc and installed vista but somehow i miss xp.
maybe im not used to it yet or maybe is just my laptop asking me to call dr kevorkian.
my laptop has 512 mb ram and windows vista is using 400 roughly 70% just beign there doing nothing.

i mean. what gives? should i give time. or just crap on it and use xp?
btw. has anyone used vista x64? i have a desktop pc with a core2duo e6600. do you think a 54bit OS is tougher than a 32 bit one in terms of stability?

toughts please laugh.gif

its an OS for the next generation of computers. It uses a lot more resources than windows xp. I use it at work, the only problems I've had were related to resource management (and game builds that couldn't handle it). I don't see any reason to get it yet unless you need something that only vista supports. It's not a bad OS, but just like XP, it'll take a little time before it becomes worth switching too. Most everything we use now was made to run on XP, not Vista. Over the next year or two that will change, and the reasons to switch will multiply exponentially, just like they did between windows 2000 pro and windows xp.

I can't believe you tried to run it on a laptop with 512mb of ram heh... that takes balls.

Yeah, running Vista with 512MB is rather silly. I run Vista Ultimate 64bit on my rig, and it's silky smooth. I don't see why people complain about the OS using your memory - that's what it's there for. If the memory is being used, that means it's not being wasted. I run it on 2GB of ram, and it's smooth as a baby's ass. All of my apps work fine on it.
There are some hardware drive issues here/there, since most vendors are slow to adapt. Those that are, release the Vista 32-bit versions before the 64-bit. So it's slow going.

As Ferg said, I wouldn't upgrade right now unless you absolutely had to. Wait until Vista SP1 - that should resolve a great deal of issues.

    ahaha
    yeah.. 512 mb smile.giflololo
so yeah. i might switch to vista ultimate x64 on my desktop later this year then. right now i cant be bothered to format it since i need to get a external disk to backup all my shit.

Vassago: that said, do you think the 64bit version is more stable than the 32 bit one?
And in terms of apps and games. Everything is supported fine in the 64bit version?

I might buy another 2 gigs of memory since 64bit vista is more likely to suport the 4gigs better. yes?

oh... no to mention i have a 8800GTS and i would tootally love to run Crysis in dx10. yay

I don't mind Vista. It does seem like a few things are slowed down, and I'm still waiting for a few companies to provide Vista supported software/drivers. What I typically recommend to people is, don't spend the money on Vista, but if it's coming prepackaged with a new PC, then use it. I've had several people talk to me about buying new PCs and opting for XP over Vista.

As for memory usage, I guess Vista targets using 60% of your ram. So it will sit up there when idle unless there isn't enough resources to keep it there (doesn't use it just to occupy 60%). So, if you are sitting at 60% at idle, then Vista is processing something that you have running, but if you start something new, it will reduce resources for that previous process, and start supplying to the new process as needed. Hope that makes sense :/

I just got a free copy of Vista Ultimate 32/64 from Dell cause they screwed up my free vista upgrade. Well actually they sent me 2 copies of the retail box for Vista Ultimate. One is on Ebay. I backed everything up on my laptop (XPS Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs of ram, 7950 GTX 512mb) Installed Vista Ultimate 64bit and it's running great. Only problem I have is only 3.25-3.5 gigs of memory is available since my motherboard wasn't designed for a 64 bit chip alone and it also supports 32 bit so the memory that is missing is being used for IRQs and some other system resource shit.

So far I have run BF2, Max 8, Max 9 32bit and 64bit, Zbrush 2 and 3, Mudbox, Unreal 4 editor (UE3), Roboblitz editor, Maya 8, Photoshop CS2, Dreamweaver and just about anything else I have tossed at it.

My only problems were the having to confirm things at all time but I disabled that and gave my account full admin rights. Made some tweaks to some system stuff and I have a few things run in xp sp2 compatability mode. It runs smooth and I have't had any system crashes and max 9 is fast as hell.

I was using Vista for a few weeks on a new computer. I decided to return the computer and switch to a Mac. Those commercials just got me! I really liked it while I was using it.
