Odd keyboard lag

I'm getting a really odd keyboard lag with my new laptop. It takes a little while to go from key-press to screen.
I thought it was my external usb keyboard - but no, it happens with the stand-alone laptop keyboard.. I've tried system restore points - to no avail.
It also appears in some games (oblivion, Stalker) but not others (F.E.A.R.) and the machine sometimes beeps at me in-game (Oblivion) if I input lots of keyboard/mouse presses in quick succession. It's odd that in some games (F.E.A.R.) the game runs fine and I can type in the chat box without any slowdown..
I don't visit dodgey sites, and have AVG running as well as my windows XP firewall and Netgear router firewall, so I don't think I have a keylogger installed.
Any ideas? The laptop is a Dell XPS M1710.
