I'm not going for a 100% authentic recreation with this. There will certainly be some changes here/there. I love Tuscan style and paintings. The form and color of this one just popped for me.
Would be really cool if you could do your textures in Painter using one of the painting brushes it has, actually gives you that clumpy look to the paint.
I think it's pretty much done now. There's one small plate I need to affix to the back, and that's about it. There will be some other details I'll add in the normal map. Ignore the uber glow, it will not be that bright in the end.
I'll probably knock out the normal mapped sconce tonight, but leave the texturing for the end process.
Now I just need to wrap my simple brain around making the modular pieces
Trying to resolve some issues with the normal map, that I can't figure out. I have max's sampling filter cranked up, but those twisted metal pieces get nasty aliasing on them when rendered out in the normal map. Any way to avert this?
I'll post a pic when I get home tonight.
its cool stuff but i think the added detail on the streetlamp makes it look muddy from a distance. Maybe magnify the detail a bit so it reads or just keept it "clean"
Thanks
If it looks real bad when composed in the scene, I can easily remove the extra light details. Those were all added in photoshop after the fact, so they're easy to remove
I still won't make the proposed new deadline, which would end this week I think, but I'm still working on this. I'll post it in p&p when it's done. Here's a small update of the wip normals:
There would be, if I started on it :P
I've been a huge slack-ass the past few weeks. Some of it has been out of my hands, but some has just been laziness.
I totally missed the comp deadline, but I'm still chugging on this in my spare time.
It's hard, man. Work has been insane lately. We've got about 300 projects going through. I'm personally working on a huge game for our show next month (basically E3 for casino game developers). It's all schnazzy realtime 3d, instead of prerendered movies. A big step for the company.
Hopefully I'll have more time after the show to finish this up. I WILL finish this.
This is my last update to this old thread. All further updates will be on my site, and I'll posting in P&P when the project is complete. Our big game show is coming up in about 3 weeks, so it won't be done until after that at some point.
Here's a small update on the sconce. Working on the spec, then I'll make reflect/gloss/emissive maps for it.

Good Luck
I'll be adding a lot of extra detail to the base's normal map by hand, to save time.
If I have time, I'll go back and add some bird shit for ya, corv :P
Here's a little work on a wall sconce:
Not much of an update. Spent a lot of time experimenting with path deform, so I hardly got anything done :P
Also updated the textures on the street lamp:

either way, I want to see it finished
I'm in dire need of updating my portfolio for next year, so I'll still finish this, contest or not.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Means a lot.
