Freelance vs. Contract

Hey guys. I've just got a weird question that suddenly popped into my head:
What's the difference between Contract Artist and Freelance when it comes to Game Art?

Freelance obviously means that you're not bound to the company, and u get a set amount of pay, while contract means you get a percentage of revenues, or wages. Right? that's what my perception is [and it's most definately wrong!]

What are the pros and cons etc. etc.

    Well, I suppose it'd depend on the situation, in my experience though Freelance is basically working off site and getting specific art outsourced to you. Contract you are bound to a contract to work for a company for a set amount of time / whatever, and typically work in house. Not sure if that's the norm everywhere, but seems to be around here. :P

    Uhh pros and cons? Contract - I get a stable income for the duration of my contract, get ownership of the project as a whole. Make less money than freelance and have to get my ass outa my house to do it (Which I actually prefer).

    Freelance - I get to work in smaller chunks from the comfort of my own home, possibly make more money per time spent, but lack the stable income of contract. Also, lack ownership of the project as a whole.

    Not entirely limited to choosing one or the other though. I'm working contract with a company right now, but have a freelance job or two lined up for the near future.

    Oh, and basically any job you get with a company will be contract at first, with the chance to turn into full time employment depending on the company. (Some companies don't really do full time at all though, for the most part they only have contract employees.)

    People tend to use those words interchangeably when referring to a game artist who works out of the studio on a temporary, contract basis.
