Create a new live account and it should tell you that you qualify for a free month. From then on you have to pay monthly or yearly.

thats the thing. i signed on [i'd registered at xbox.ca first though.. so i recovered my gamertag] and it says my membership is Silver.

okay, new question! [i should change the title of this thread]:
i've got my 360, and i've got a Surround Speaker set. Except, the reciever doesn't have a toslink input. It has RCA [red/white] inputs, and an Aux In input. Is there any way of connecting the 360 to my sound system? will connecting the RCA cables give me surround sound? or just 5 very loud speakers? Also, are there optical-to-RCA or optical-to-aux cables available?

Not sure about the sound thing. Mine is connected to my TV through the RCA, so I don't know if it does surround. I plan on getting the optic cable later so I can connect it to my surround system.
