This is it! The thread for your final submissions. Please post one beauty render, one wireframe shot and one thumbnail. The thumbnail is the only image with any constraints and that needs to be NO MORE than 256x256.
Can we point back to this thread the next time all the environment artists complain when we have mostly character based competitions? I know things come up, but a single finisher when we finally go with an environment challenge (that the environment artists claimed to be excited about) is kind of abismal.
This comp shows why we normally go with character comps 99% of the time.
Yup, point definitely made here. I actually have my piece 'finished' but ran in to lighting issues right at the end. I wasn't able to remedy it in time so I didn't bother posting. Now that I've missed the date I'm going to do some proper renders (with a character) and post it in P&P.
Hm. Achieving a winning ribbon this way is not very satisfying. Adam Bromell's work looked much better than mine (which was more a fun work)... I didn't expect to "win".
But maybe I can prove myself in the character contests - though I am more into making environment graphics. But I won't ask for such a further contest topic like this
Hey, take in the glory
Your piece actually is still pretty cool. Some texture work would really make it stand out, but it's still worthy You get a special tag now

Right. This is what, like the 2nd or 3rd time we've had an env piece for a comp? And this one time that only one person completed, is the reason the env artists are outcast? I smell bullshit. But whatever.

I'm not really sure what you're disputing. This is the first environment challenge we've had in a while, yeah? Several prominent environment artists who've been clamoring for an env challenge expressed interest and excitement for this challenge, yeah? Only one person finished, right? And besides Vahl, none of the character guys jumped in, which is the majority of the board, so it limited the entreants to just a couple, right?
What part are you calling BS? It all looks legit to me. Go with a cool character comp, get tens of entrants and at least 4-5 finishers or more. Go with an environment comp, get 10 entrants total, and 1 finisher. If the goal of this section is to get a lot of the members involved, and push them to get finished work it's obvious why character stuff is what most comps revolve around.
Maybe you could clarify your argument to me, because right now I don't understand.
I think one of the issues with that contest is the time, I could have finished with an extra week, same thing for Adam, thing is, a full level takes more time to build from scratch than a character can (we're talking about a small character, not a domwar thing which takes 1.5 month, for sure), if that was just let's say a building, it would only take one week or two to create, but a full level that involves creation of modular assets, textures, level design (more or less but that's still important) and lighting (which is most the time the thing that is forgotten , the lighting is one of the most important steps)takes much more time to build.
also, as Ben stated the thing is that polycount is mainly a character artists board, if that contest was on a level design board, or enviro design/architecture board, there would have been much more entrants and finishers, IMO.
in any case, thanks for this contest, even if I didn't finish, I enjoyed it, and will for sure finish my entry when I'll have more free time.
