looking for an old game

used to play this as a kid in the arcades: its a side-scroller d&d style, 1-2 players, big guy with sword ascending a castle. there are like a zillion levels. as you go along u can free prisoners from cells that join u as sidekick. there are many types, a mage with huge orbs spinning around him, a bomberman, a big axe throwing dude, the strongest (i think) is a swords-shooting gargoyle. they usually say 'thank you' and offer you like an apple or something. the bosses are huge dragons that are very hard to kill. plenty of creatures and chests and bonuses etc. anyone?

Wow, that sounds like Metal Slug in a way Shotgun, but of course its not with the fantasy aspect:) You might want to check out SNK's old arcade library as they had something similiar to this, I think it was called Magician lord or some such. Good luck
