Hmm, sounds alright. I'll probably pick this up when it comes out because I buy everything Dream Theater do.
Sounds a tad too similar to stuff from Octavarium for my liking though... they need to branch out a bit more...
If you ever get a chance to see them live do it. I've seen them twice and was blown away each time. So far what I've heard from this CD is much better than Octavarium which I felt was a weak CD for them.
You should also check out Labrie's latest solo CD. It's not prog rock but hard with some prog influences perhaps.
Yeah, seeing them live was amazing - after performing a ridiculously long and awesome set, they proceeded to play ALL of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" ... perfectly.
I was fortunate enough to see them when they toured with Queensryche. DT is coming back through Houston Aug 4, so I'll probably try and catch them then. They also have a Dallas show lined up for Aug 2 for you polycounters to the north.
There is something to be said for a band with an asian on base and a pirate on drums.
I just realised my post was pretty douchebaggy.
I guess i can't stand to see a post by myself and immediately think of Cheapalert, so: sorry about that, heh.
Technically awesome as usual. Still a little out there with the lyrics (having trouble following the "story" of it). Certainly the best arrangement since Scenes From A Memory.
You guys should check out Liquid Tension for pure instrumental Dream Theater. It's pretty much the current DT line up with no Labrie and no vocals. I believe it's how they got their current keyboard player which has been a revolving door for them.
My DJing friend asked me an interesting question today, after listening through Scenes from a memory, Octivarium, and Train of Thaught.
Do dream theater record with alternate time signatures throughout some of their tracks because they have become expected to?
a good example, would be "As i am" - Train of thaught. where in the second verse, they suddenly change to 7/8 then 6/4 then 9/8 (i think...) for no apparent reason, other than the vocals don't 100% match up.
if it weren't for that line, the track would be much much better, it would flow easier, and wouldn't throw as many listeners off.
while i can certainly appreciate a lot of their alternate music, and for the most part, it fits very well. there are some cases when i've thought "that ain't right..." about their stuff.
just a question to see what people think really...

going to see them in August at the Rosemont Theater in chicago
I hope to someday see em on concert too, sounds like their shows are something else.

Haven't picked up my copy yet...but I've read good things.
I'll take a look in the shops for the new DT though, should be good.
And you guys would like it more all instrumental? I love James LaBrie's Vocals.
