Max 9... what units for Decay in Displace?

I'm trying to setup a SuperSpray particle system in Max 9.1 that mimics how doppler shrinks/expands sound waves as objects approach/recede from the emitter. I'm using a cylindrical Displace spacewarp, with a Gradient Ramp, and all is well.

I just can't visualize out how the Decay spinner works. I'd like the displacement to only affect a range inside the Displace gizmo, then falloff to no displacement as the particles leave the gizmo volume.

What units does Decay use? Radius of gizmo? World units? Is it a linear decay or exponential?

Help file doesn't say much...

By default, Displace has the same strength throughout world space. Increasing Decay causes the displacement strength to diminish as distance increases from the position of the Displace gizmo. This has the effect of concentrating the force field near the gizmo, similar to the field around a magnet repelling its opposite charge. Default=0.0.
