What is the average poly count?

What is the average poly count for an airplane, weapons (sword shotgun), fully functional male character and a vehicle used in games ranging from GTA San Andreas to Halo?

If someone could answers this I would much appreciate it.

Usually between 200 and 10000, if you want to play it safe.

There really is no "average" polygon count. There are far too many variables that come into play to come up with an "average." The polygon count might depend on the type of game, whether or not there will be more than one asset on screen, whether or not the asset will visible to only one player, and not others, etc.

yeah thats a pretty open question. Halo and GTA are 2 totally different games so they counts would be different.

It really depends on what engine you are using, what type of game, what it's going to be run on, etc, etc...

It's all about performance. You do what you need to do, to get performance out of the engine. And every engine is different, so those values change.

I always aim for a polycount of 1 but I tend to go over that budget.

I'm working on a couple UE3 titles right now and the counts are being pretty generous on things that I am working on.

It's not just polycounts though that you gotta worry about but the texture res / size that will really eat up memory and all kinds of special things you can do with shaders now.

Your question at least tried to nail down a few more specifics, but we can't really do the 'range' thing - we could probably give the counts for Halo and for SA, but not inbetween.

Remember that most/many of those models will also have LOD versions whch will be used depending how far away you are from the object.

I agree with basicly what has been said above, but if you looking just for a number I would say 4000-5000 polygons for a character.

That sounds a bit high for a San Andreas character. I'd say you'd be more likely to be around 2000 and less for a basic pedestrian.

SA was around 1200 polies per standard gameworld character.

IV is 69.
