Today was an insane day. And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts
In building and shaping the site Ive always tried to stay as hands on as possible. Weve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.
But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, youve made it clear. Youd rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we wont delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.
If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.
To be honest, I was getting tired of people bitching about it yesterday. I understand both sides, but the bullshit theories people were coming up with was rediculous. I was actually looking forward to the Digg community filtering out a bit. I wonder if they will unban some of those accounts now.
Any 'news site' whose headlines look like clippings from a LANparty chatlog isn't worth reading. I stopped visiting the site only a few days ago, good timing on my part.
I mainly use the RSS feed from the site on my google home page. If something catches my eye, I'll check it out, but most of the time it's just shit lately. Typically it's fanboy news these days. I'm mainly tired of the dumbasses adding their opinions to the title, or using words like 'BREAKING:'. 'GREATEST FUCKING IMAGE ON EARTH' is not a title, it's an opinion, which is usually wrong.
Dude, I'm tellin' ya, chicks dig tattoos. Granted, a flaming skull or dragon tattoo would probably get you more action, but cryptic numbers across the chest are pretty cool too... like Leonard from Memento.
