Somehow I think if people aren't willing to use to search function they wouldn't even notice a sticky. But, I'd have to agree, it couldn't hurt.

By default, the search function only goes back a week. I've said it before, but I think that really needs to be changed if people are going to bitch about other users who can't use the search function properly.
Seriously though, probably something like "Polycount Model Database..." with "Sorry for the deception, but due to numerous 'where are the models' threads it's become apparant that we need to sticky a thread describing the current status of the Polycount Model Database...yada yada yada. Please do not post asking for models, we don't need another cat thread."
Also, I'm sure atleast 75% of the people that post here asking for models, atleast clicked the 'models' link on the front page. Maybe changing that to something more descriptive of what happened to the database, along with a 'please don't post in the forums asking for models.', would help hinder the amount of 'where are my quake models?' threads.
Even if it doesn't fully stop the threads, we could atleast have one thread to link the poster to, instead of having this discussion every time.
@keyser: ahhh...yeah I forgot about the default to a week. That does pose a problem, but even still...noticing that the search function only goes back a week by default isn't exactly hidden.

As far as I can tell, it's not possible to change the default initial settings for search duration in the forum software control panel. I thought those buttons were fairly obvious myself though.

Now why has that link never shown up before? :O

My bandwidth wasn't ready for public consumption so I poked zakk to mirror it. Notice i renamed some of the zips to dodge some Marvel googling (like "fagneto")
Humble Suggestion: I'm an ol' polycounter. I don't miss the old models as much as I miss the focus that was on them. That was what polycount was all about to me. How about a new forum topic-- "Player Models"-- allowing folks to show their stuff/get critiques and possibly link to working models hosted on other sites with sticky threads for the old stuff. I know it's redundant with the "pimping and previews" area and that the player model scene has died down a bit, but I think it would be a good addition nonetheless.
There could be a link from the first polycount.com page linking the current "models" link that goes to the current more or less empty "Rendering in progress..." page to the new forum area-- "Player Models." It would quickly replace the "rendering/work in progress" situation.
Also, the site needs a bit of publicity-- perhaps we polycounters could publicize the site in game engine/game forums at the very least. The traffic could add up to more affiliate income for polycount to help pay for running the site.
I actually kinda like the idea. I haven't been around as long as most of you guys, but an extra subforum or sticky or two to encourage polycount members (old and new) to make tutorials/ppm style models could be really cool, and maybe get polycount back to it's roots in a small way.
thanks cheap, that made my day. OMGoodness, cow is on that list, my first (i can't rember, there where a few) quake3 ppm, absolutly horrible test model using default animation but would have people falling off chairs for laughing when playing against it (a annoying evil player with stupid ppm reaction?)

At least the majority of people.
Seems like a sticky could stop the questions.
Maybe "Came here looking for player models?" or something?
I just don't want it to be redundant, if the name doesn't make people who ask this question click it before they post.

A tutorials forum would be cool as well.
I don't know...
