For anyone interested the Gears of War Limited Edition Strategy Guide with the art book is on sale at Amazon for $9.57. Beautiful book with some great art in there. I definitely recommend it. Enjoy.
The "art book" that came with the collector's edition was the poorest excuse for an art book I've ever seen. Though, I hear the strategy guide has some good art. Either way, extremely good deal there.
well 10 bucks is a great price to get a lot of hawkprey's (and other epic greats) work in one place... aaand i just bought it. damn you, amazon.com one click ordering.

Wait a second...you were notified D'Artiste Character Modeling 2 Shipped or the Gears Art Book? I ordered the Character Modeling 2 book when they first began preorders like a month ago and my order status still hasn't changed to shipping yet. I hope it's soon because I'm really looking forward to it.
errr nevermind...that was so freaky. I just posted that question for you Gwot and then went and checked my email again and I literally got an email from Ballistic Publishing saying it shipped to me. Their email was time stamped like 10 min before my question I posted. Maybe my telekinetic powers do work after all. I was like damn it put my book in a box and ship it please.
I think that I already had most of the stuff from character artist II from the GDC lectures (which where brilliant), I was hoping it would be in much more detail- does anyone who has read both know this?
yeah thats an awesome deal for 10 bucks. I got the book when the game came out with the strategy guide. Just some really nice stuff inside. Now that Character Artist 2 is shipping Well thats even more Gears of War good ness...
kita, kita!
arrived from amazon... this is really quite a good deal for ten bucks. the phrase "handsomely appointed" comes to mind, and there is indeed a good and thick artbook to go along with the guide. aces.
So just to clarify, is the book that comes with the strategy guide different to the little book you get with the special edition copy of GoW? I still haven't been able to figure that out...
The art book in the guide is very differnt than the little book that came with the special edition copy of GOW. The little book is mostly just concept art where the art book in the strategy guide has a lot more additional concept art and shows character, vehicle and environment renders with some explanations of them.
One thing the book showed to me, was how different the in game models were from Hawkprey's original 3/4 look/feel paintings. I think it was to their detriment. I think his original paintings had 10x the dynamic shapes, interesting silhouette and overall appeal than the in-game models turned out. The in game models were really detailed tubes in comparison to his original paintings. It was a real shame, as I think the game would have been quite a bit more aesthetically pleasing had they adhered to his concepts.
One area that really struck me was the main characters arm. In Hawkprey's drawing you could still tell he had a wrist, and a muscle bulk at the elbow. It was dynamic, it curved, and it tapered. The in game version was a cylinder, with no taper or curve.
i picked this up when Gears was released. Its an beautiful art book, much better than the flipbook that came with the special edition. If i'd know this, i would of skipped the extra $10 for it

Yeah, here. Hopefully nobody minds this, since it's just one page and it's being used to inspire more people to buy the book: Here's the section on the boomer. Definitely not what you get in the collectors edition game.
If anyone thinks it's wrong to post a photo from the book, though (not even a scan ) I can edit it out.
damnit. i keep meaning to post some art from Gears (well, there's one.. the Boomshot weapon skin )
I finally got a chance to check out the D'Artist book today, it's really worth the money, and i bug Kev all the time about miscellaneous tricks :P He is a true badass.
the Strat Guide art book has just about everything from the broad environment shots, to concpet:in-game comparisons of levels and meshes, characters, weapons, flat shaded models, concepts galore, some unused stuff, and high res shots. It is a lot beefy-er than the Destroyed Beauty book packaged in with the CETin game.
Moose if you wouldn't mind posting some Gears work, it'd be very appreciated...anything you'd like to show. I'm impatiently waiting for my D'Artiste Character Modeling 2 book to show up. Supposed to be here on Monday.
Ha...bought. Mainly because of what you guys posted here about it. Amazon.com should be giving you guys royalties for this. Ohh and its down to $9 from the original post of $9.57, if the art wasn't incentive enough...
Yeah we just got the Character Modelling 2 book here at work, it's awesome... I ordered one for myself straight after flicking through it!
Really great tips and tricks and general workflow pointers in there from all the artists. I'm not a huge fan of some of the ZBrush sculpting (it's a little blobby for my tastes), but the finished models and renders look amazing.
i dont have the game either lupus, or a 360...but even flipping through the strategy guide was really cool--thats a beautiful book on it own, as far strategy guides go
yeah the strategy guide has some nice level layouts from top down and has some good art in it on its own. Looks like i'm gonna be ordering my character modeling 2 book as well. Time to build up my library again. Ahh and it's a write off since it's reference stuff...
I just got mine in the mail. I've only looked through the art book so far. It's pretty neat, but I wish they showed more environment stuff and had some more commentary.

Nice... I'll probably still pick that one up too... My CM2 just arrived today as well! Joy!

Arghhh...so lucky. I'm still waiting...impatiently of course. At least I know it's on its' way. Must have CM2.
PS - Sneaking over to Gwot's right now to "borrow".
Its pretty cool, well worth the price.

Is this strategy guide the one that comes with the art book? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gears-Official-S...4863&sr=8-5
I don't have the game (nor a 360 for that matter), so all I want is the art book, no use for the strategy guide.
anyone from EU ever ordered from amazon US? delivery charges/VAT/customs - what was the story?
I got mine from the 3rd place in there (£9.42) as it ships from the UK. Including P&P it was about £12.15
owell ill have to pay more,
least its has free shipping,
i am always late on finding good deals,
Chris
