Call of Duty : Modern Warfare Trailer
By way of Destructoid, the MW trailer... I've never liked the CoD franchise, but since it's a significant name, thought I should post. Since it's a common hobby to get all uppity about the graphics, what do you guys think?
Weird, non-cohesive stylized look IMO... With really flat lighting.
Edit: And I hope that's the sun giving the gun a gold'ish reflection, or war just got a whole lot dumber. 50 Cent in the middle east wit' gold plated .45...

I really liked CoD, mostly because I played endless hours of it drunk and chatting with friends over teamspeak. When I went to play CoD2 no one was as interested in playing a rehash. Not having other drunk friends to chat with made it suck and I think I only played it online for a week. We did revisit CoD2 recently and it was fun which only proved my point about being drunk and with friends, heh.
As long as they pull off a few "Storming of Normandy,Stalingrad" moments, which in my eyes where minor bench mark moments in games. I might like playing thru it once. But it looks like they are gearing up for less focus on the single player campaigns and more on on-line play.
Modern warfare isn't boring, my no. At least, it doesn't look like it from the trailer. Call of Duty 5 should totally be a civil war game. That'd be sweet. Muzzle loaders, cannons, bayonets. Heh
Look at the Battlefield series right there. BF1942 was great, but BF2 (modern warfare) is far and away a better game. BF2142 certainly has it's problems, but nothing I would consider as the "death" of the series.
While the series is nice and it's a welcome change from rehashing WW2 battles again and again, I wonder if it will be linear as hell like the rest of the series, and only last 5 hours in single player like the series always has. I wouldn't shell out the full price for such a game.

Extended footage and whatnot.

A nicely put together trailer, but it doesn't give you a sense of the gameplay. A lot of that looked like in game cut scenes. I enjoyed the original CoD. It was groundbreaking in its day in some respects like the stuff Vig mentions but began to feel very tired to me in subsequent titles. Id love to see them open things up a bit, and have the whole thing feeling a bit less pre-determined.
Overall I think it looked good graphically but I have some distinct peeves, some of which are the same things that irk me greatly about the new MOH trailer . (except that doesn't look as good as this) A little too much ambient light in the environment, to the point that there's not much in the way of shading or occlusion and stuff almost feels fullbright without any shadows under cars, characters etc, but more than anything I loathe and DETEST the velvet 'rim light' shader plastered all over the characters. (also ridiculously over the top prominent in MOH ) EA had a weird obsession with this, and they were buzy plastering it all over boxers and other sporting characters without stopping to see whether or not it really worked. To me it just does not look right at all seeing a glowing outline around a character and more bounced light than directional, and it totally pops characters out of their world, but maybe they want that for gameplay reasons, who knows.
but Jimmies_the_squirrel...cant tell if youre kidding..but that actually sounds like it might be a refreshing idea...dont forget revolvers, dynamite, and the gatling gun!
If anybody wants a closer look, Infinity Ward has a proper 720p trailer available at : http://www.infinityward.com/video/cod4mw_HD720p_60fps.mov
I figure it's a coldwar setting with 3 campaigns; american, arab and soviet.
I interviewed at IW about a year ago, and even got a job offer, but ultimately turned them down. While the team was super nice, and their offices are even nicer, I just couldn't see myself spending all my time working on realistic (read: boring) FPS's - even if they were finally ditching WWII. It's just not my bag.
That said - a year ago the game was already looking great, and I'll be picking it up just because I'm curious as to how it will turn out. And I do know more about the game than I'm saying, but of course can't talk about it.
COD2 was a step back in my opinion, as it went for more realism. It was a lot easier to get killed, even if you were slick with your positioning. Close range combat would pretty much mean your death every time, and long range snipe camping became much more common. Although originally they let you use smoke, which would cover close range specialists, almost all servers disabled this feature because frame rates took such a huge hit from it.
Haven't played COD 3 yet. Kind of lost interest in it as it seemed to be following the COD 2 mold. I actually started playing COD 1 again, and it is still quite fun.
Kinda worrying how things fall off like that, I felt the same about battlefield... BF1942 was (and still is) intensely fun, Vietnam was still pretty good, then BF2 was just more of the same, and BF2142 just feels empty and boring now.
I guess this preference might be because I am a decent shot, but generally can move much better than most players. And at close range, movement is the key to winning. In COD 1, I'd go one on three all of the time, occasionally attacking one on five against lesser competition, and just be ducking, dodging, killing and snatching health packs. I just had a tremendously fun time playing this way, but in COD 2 this is very difficult to pull off.
Damn this work now I want to play bf2 again.
I think it is a common marker of franchise over extension ...

Nah, I think that they finally realized that they just couldn't compete in the WW2 game market. Now the MoH guys just need to realize it as well...
