Most of you might remember the amazingly nice piece MoP linked a few months ago, well the artist Marek Denko, posted a "making of" tutorial and it was a great read so I thought I would share.
The only downer is that you need to log into Autodesk's Area site to view it, but honestly its worth it.

Bump and normal maps are your friend. They'd also decrease his rendering times by 3000%.
Normal maps and GI don't work very well together as far as I know. Wish they would.

If all your scene has is a skylight or something, yeah, normal maps are pointless. But you definately can make it work, using a more elaborate light setup, and a faint GI light.
