I never actually knew what vertex shading was until I read over the contest, but I have painted skin weights before. The model isn't optimized yet and probaly won't be in some areas to get better details when I apply the color to the vertices.
This a Lara Croft like character, but she doesn't seem very female from the front view. She is already at 3200 polys so I may decide to change the hair style after I complete the arms to the finger tips.
I will have some clearer pics after I fill in more details, but I would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer.

My next steps:
- I need to edit the eye lids and move the eyeball, and probably do a little more tweaking on the face.
- Tweak the neck and jacket colar.
- Start optimizing, mostly just deleting half of center line edges.
- Add more hair.
- Setting up the bones for a rough animation test
- Painting the vertices

( and on a side note, I checked your site there, you make some great skins and very cool ship models)

I'm not quite satisfied with the head so I haven't weld the 2 halves yet, but she is under 4000.
I optimized the crotch too much, but will fix it.
I'm just about ready to bind the character to the skeleton.

The scene was created in Maya and the render is just a screen capture of the regular viewport, not high quality mode.
I might redo this character with proper textures in the near future.
