You've all seen those amazing chalk drawings that simulate a sense of depth from certain angles ..

This vid shows them in the process of creating one. It starts to come together amazingly towards the end.

that's cool, but I'm disappointed they don't show the hard part, how they layout the perspective in the first place. Still cool to watch it all come together.

All you need to do is take a photograph of the place you're going to do the work, from the angle you want it to be viewed, then draw on top of the photo and transform the drawing into a square shape (easy with photoshop, there's probably a traditional method of doing it which takes longer though).
I saw the E3 Gears of War one, that guy brought along a big square piece of canvas with the outlines traced in already, and painted the colour in with chalk on the day.

With digital tools it's really easy, I tried it (although didn't do the actual sidewalk bit!), you can just draw whatever over the photo, transform it into a square or rectangle, then print it out or trace it onto a big piece of cloth or paper.
