Has the focus of polycount changed?

hello, this is the 2nd time I have posted asking this info. Not sure if my first post was deleted or what?? anyway, I have been checking in to polycount for a few months now and most of the pages are still down. What happened to the tutorials and models to download? Those pages have not been up in what seems like months to me. Has the focus of polycount changed such that these will never return?

This topic has been discussed before in this forum, and the general reply is - yes, Polycount has changed, but we are trying to find the time to bring back a lot of the stuff which made many people visit.
Huge file sizes and heavy traffic for models and tutorials means that it's hard to host it all and the vast database of models means that it's very hard to organise and update.
Don't give up hope though, there's still a lot of cool stuff to be found just by reading the news and the forums, and if you stick around I think you'll see eventually tutorials and older models coming around again.

in order to have fair competition with cgchat in the dominance war we must strip what awesomeness we have on the site down to blog format to get even

Well, this certainly is the most well-written, least angsty of these we've had in a while, it has to be said.
Bearkub recently wrote up a short (hah) reply to a similar (in message, although laced with angst and anger) question in a thread a while back, i'm surprised it wasn't stickied. If you search for 'models' and 'spinning quad', you have a fair chance of finding it.

I would have to say no, nope, the focus of polycount hasn't changed at all.

Ever since the Q2pmp days, I know _I_ never visited the front page or cared about the model archive wink.gif

It is true that the site has changed. I used to love downloading and viewing all the models that everyone would make for Quake II and Quake III. However, this isn't entirely the fault of polycount itself. In their quest for more technically capable games, companies have made it harder to import models into their games. With Quake II, it was as simple as copying a folder to a directory. With Quake III, you had to expande a huge zip file, and format your model's directory structure properly. And its just gotten more and more complex from that point forward. Getting custom models working in most commercial games is just harder than it used to be.

And to be fair, I've always considered polycount's forums to be the real strength of the site. It's where the community really comes together. And the fact that it isn't focused solely on plug-in player models allows more people to participate and contribute. This is an artist's community, and its better to have less focus if that means fewer restrictions. If polycount has changed, its most likely because it's members have wanted it to.
