A few game genres are well past their heyday. And I for one would love to see their return, I was wondering what games you guys know of are on the horizon for these genres, or games you recommend from them, new or old.
Adventure games (Grim Fandango style)?
Beat em ups (streets of rage) or the similar hack n slashers (Golden Ave)?
Sci fi sims (from X-Wing, Freespace or Mechwarrior 2)?
Any other forgotten genres are welcome!

Beat'em'ups... There's a decent amount, but they're all shit. The best recent Beat'Em Up I played was The Warriors, but there's also another excellent one coming very soon. Castle Crashers, made by Tom Fulp of Alien Hominid and Newgrounds fame. Castle Crashers Trailer
As for Sci-Fi sims... *Sigh* I know. : ( I do miss them. Last goodie was X3, which is also definately worth a peek. Never fear though, EA is gracing us with such revivals such as "Wing Commander: Arena" to fill the gap left in our hearts. </sarcasm> Can't be too negative though, if anything, it might get some people interested in the IP, and an actual proper sequel could be made.
What I miss in particular are Turn Based, Isometric strategy games. Squad scaled, like X-Com UFO Defense, (Irrational is *rumoured* to be working on a successor.) or Jagged Alliance. Luckily, FF:Tactics Advance, and some other titles here and there help seal the gaping hole in my heart.
(Who knew ragdoll would be so cool in a TBS?)

OMG the original X-Com UFO Defense was one of the best games EVER MADE. It was hard, multi-faceted, with just an awesome amount of re-playability. I have a copy...but alas, it will not work on my XP machine.
Anyone craving some old pixel paint adventure games should check out Abandonia[/url
They have Alone in the Dark 1, which I think was like the first 3D adventure game I ever played....it has painted backgrounds and like a 50 poly character, but its AWESOME. If I'm not mistaken this may be the first survival horror game.
...oh shit..I just did a little digging and they have XCom 1 !!! Its called "UFO, Enemy Unkown" for some reason, but whatever...It looks like they also have the insanely hard second and third ones as well (I thought the series lost alot of its charm when it moved to little 3d sprites rather than the pixel painted syle) I'm downloading that as I type this
...they also have DAY OF THE TENTACLE!
Dead genre? There's more point and click adventures than you can shake a stick at here.

Heh. I forgot about Europe. In NA you can go to an EB, and see a good handful of these Adventure Games that you'd never heard of. They rarely get reviewed either, so its hard to make a call on whether or not they're worth buying.

Yeah, the advent of XP has made retro gaming a complete and total bitch. Thankfully, there's a few ways you can still get at your older titles. Virtual PC allows you to emulate a legacy OS, provided you have it installed somewhere else on the PC, and DosBox is pretty much what the name says, a Dos Emulator, with surprisingly high system requirements. (Particularly handy for those *extra* old games, like Strife, or System Shock 1.)
