Long time, no post. Beware!!! Crappy concept ahead.
d_wip002.jpg

I'm no concept artist and I probably never will be. Anyways, this is my "space dwarf" ... havn't really come up with a name yet. Plus, his face looks too "nice". Any ideas on how to get a "mean" look without any ridiculous scars all over the place?

... and no, those are not laz0r swords. They're laz0r cannons. I hope the picture makes some sense? frown.gif

Glad to see you join in qlz, I like the concept. I don't think he looks like a niceguy, but yeah you can probably try to make him a bit more evil.

Here we go. Some colortesting etc.

this concept is taking me too long(due to newbie-concept-skills) so Im gonna go ahead and skip to modeling. Might work a little bit more on the backpack and weapons to make em look a little bit more interesting.
Thinking about working some more with the nuclear battery-kind of thing.

snowfly: yeah, well I some ppl didn't get it and they got kinda disappointed when I explained... it wasn't as cool as they had imagined smile.gif

    tores: cheers!

shut the drawer in your desk that has all the WH40k pictures in it. and while you're at it, shut the drawer with all the 'Tranny Granny!' mags in it, that shit is nasty.
anyway, space dwarf has waaay too many 40kisms here, combined with the usual token dwarf features. lose the braidcaps on his beard. lose the beard, too, unless you can come up with an interesting and non-traditional way for him to have a beard. i know it's crazy to suggest a dwarf, spacey or otherwise, without a beard, but there's bound to be a way to do it in a new and interesting way.
i like the concept generally, but you need to start pulling water from a different well; the lascannon, hammer, pauldrons, wires-in-the-head, and chest-glow-y thing are all pretty darn WH40kish in some way or other.
this doesn't mean you need to travel to take drugs and come back with shapes that don't exist in three dimensions in order to have a "new" or exciting concept, you just need to combine the old ideas in cool new ways.
something that might help you a lot is to give your space dwarf some quality, directive, or feature other than just generally being a space dwarf, and use that to guide and inform the rest of your decisions as per concept and detailing.
by that i mean give yourself a question to answer, or play with the character like you were going to roleplay him in a game of totally evil bastards. like "what makes him so angry in the morning?" or "he comes from planet ____ where everybody is _____ so they're all quite evil," that sort of thing. i know i'm being pretty vague here, but the particular germ or kernel of inspiration usually isn't all that important, it's how you follow through on it.
so it's not like you have to ditch the space dwarf, you just need to feed him some stronger sauce and draw from more varied or unlikely inspirations.
i'm not trying to be down on you man--you clearly have a certain amount of ability, so i'm trying to see you make good on that. but don't take too long to think on it, time's wasting. keep the thread updated!

And they all got wiped out by Tyranid hive fleet Kraken if I remember correctly. I really shouldn't know these things. It can't be good for my social status.

Anyway, I think most of it is ok. You can get away with up with a neat gimmick. The beard is the only real thing that screams "I'm a Warhammer derivative". I reckon you should focus on this as something to sell the character as something original. Perhaps its some sort of symbiotic beastie that can snare enemys with long tendrils of hair or some such.
