Hey all! This is my first submission to this forum, and I gotta say I am an psyched to win this war! Looks like I got here just in time!

This is just the head so far, but I've got an image of him cooking up in the old skull. I was thinking of going either old-world barbarian with him, or some kind of sci-fi. Perhaps both? Here' his head, you tell me.

Further thumbnails will come once I get a little feedback.

I would definitely suggest sci fi. Thumbnail some silhouettes man!

Alrighty! Got my first little thing whipped up here...

I kind of hate the feet so far, and I'm not entirely sure what to you with his arms. I am thinking one hard-wired in a big drill or claw, and the other hard-wired into come absurdly large projectile weapon. Either way this baddy's got mean attitude. Critique away! crazy.gif

    Oooo wicked!
His feet looks ouch though.. maybe get rid of the platform?
  • anton980
I dont like the feet either. The top looks interesting! I'd like to hear why he has nails in him, too

The nails are hammered into him by his overlord, purely for the purpose of inflicting pain and generating anger (which increases his strength). Same reasom the metal plating around his calves are anchored to him by means of drilling those spikes into his bones. Same reason his lips are removed (see first pic for better detail on that). As for the weapons, I am thinking a cannon on one side, a drill on the other. Concepts soon!

Here's a weaponry concept. The gun (firing big tank shells) goes on the left, the drill (with steroid feed) on the right. Let me know what you think, I'll have more tomorrow!

Here's the next batch on concept stuff. I think I'm getting closer to a finalized something in some areas. I replaced those dreadful feet with some nice boots, and changed the hip-flask looking steroid bottles to some nice bubble ones. I also made him about 4x as big. I removed the spikes in him, for now, but I might add them back in later. Anyway, comment away!

    Polycounters, I beseech you...

I came to this forum as a student, currently learning the art of 3D modeling. While I have a developing grasp of the topic and an abiding interest, I am not able to produce the quality of work neccessary to compete in this particular Dominance War. If there are any modelers out there who are still in need of a subject, I would gladly offer up my concept to them to model, in hopes of somehow contributing to our impending victory in the Second Dominance War. If anyone is interested, please reply to this thread or PM me. I am willing to leave the concept as it is, or I can develop it further if another modeler is willing to work with me towards a common goal. Hopefully soon I will be able to participate in the same high-quality contests as you fine ladies and gentlemen.

    -Dread_Reaper

P.S. I do not know if collaboration on a project violates the rules of the Dominance War. If so, please let me know.
  • anton980
I think as long as the other person is not enrolled themselves, you can collaborate. Cant have more than 2 people working on a project though. Hope you find someone soon!

If you know of anyone who is not enrolled already, I would be more than happy to collaborate in any way I can. There hasn't really been much interest in this concept however, and I think it will likely just remain unused, at least until I am able to improve my skills enough to participate in this contest next year. If you know of anyone who is interested, please send them this way! Thanks anton, I love your concept.

Dude, just get into it. I'm a total noob too but I figured what the hell. I have learned a lot already and doubtlessly will learn a lot more before I'm through. No one will laugh at you for making a bad model, on the contrary, you will probably get a lot of people stoping by to give you tips.

Do it do it do it, go on Doooo it wink.gif

You know Xaltar, you may be right. Maybe I should. I guess I'm not incredibly bad... and it would be a good way to learn. When does the contest end? When do I have to have a submission in by?

    -Dread_Reaper

P.S. I consider this to be my best work yet. Thoughts?

Head over to the dominance war 2 website and sign up wink.gif

The contest ends on the 19th so there is still a fair amount of time left.

Thats a pretty solid mech, I'm sure you'll do fine smile.gif

Do you think I should work on this mech and enter it instead? I mean, this was my first 3D model ever, so I could definately make some improvements to it. Plus I would skin it and such. What do you think? Improve upon this mech, or try continue with the previous idea?

I wouln't do that, it doesn't fit the brief at all, go over to the dominance war site and read the brief. It looks really cool though!

jap! 1. that and 2. you learn more if you make stuff new from scratch

and wtf.. nobody expects from someone more than he-she could do with the state of skills he-she has
but they expect you to improve them as much as you can .. so keep on smile.gif

Here is an early WIP of our boy Sabbit. I kind of need some pointers on what to do from here after I work out the model a bit more, or what steps I should next take. I have Zbrush 2.0 and Max 8 to work with, as well as Jasc Paintshop Pro 9. So yes. Critique.

look exact at your concept and try to capture the silhouette as close as possible

also i would recommend to try a 45°-arm pose than the t-pose and you should try to give all the edgeloops a more natural non linear feeling.. atm your body looks very blocky

and at this early stage of modelling i would also not model any tiny muskles (neck)

and don´t render on a so dark background and i always helps to add a edged-faces viewport screenshot or a flatshadet render instead of a smoothed

hope this helps a bit smile.gif
    and keep on !!

I don't mean to n00b it up here, but what are edgeloops? As for his pose, I will definately rotate his arms down once I have their shape more worked out. Things are always easier to edit when they're not at an angle. The blockiness is due to having to edit more verticies, which I doubled. I'll add a screen shot right now.

you should realy work with less vertices to hassle with

the amount of points make it very hard for you to give the model fast a clear shape

thats only a tut for a head (daz you could realy posted this by yourself tongue.gif )
but it helps to get the point

I originally was working with about a quarter of the polys, until I got what I felt was the "basic shape" down, then I simply tesselated the entire model so I could work with more complex shapes with greater detail. I am not sure if this was the right thing to do, I suspect my processes may be incorrect. I suppose the next step would be to take this into Zbrush, yes? Or should I map it first in Max? Please help the noob!

its unimportant wich way you take.. i would say.. if you go the sculping way you even use less polys than if you model with sub-d anyway.. you have way to much .. tesselating is always no good choice

Well damn, not a whole lot I can do about the tessellation now. Regardless, I think I will take it into Zbrush and start sculpting soon. I don't know really when to do it, but I think the time is soon. Also, I was wondering about skinning the model and UV mapping it. Should i do that before I sculpt it, or after?

hmm not sure.. i uv-map und skin the lowpoly only
and i build the lowpoly after the high so logically also after sculpting

Do you know if I can texture a model in Zbrush? It seems that I can select different colors, brushes, and textures from the different panels, so I wonder if I could actually do all of it in Zbrush. If there is anyone who can further clarify, please inform me.

Here is another WIP of Sabbit. I turn on the smoothing modifier on this one to give a more clear idea of his appearence. I am still wondering what I can do to further improve this basic model, but I am also wondering about the tubes and hoses that go into him, and how I should go about that. His backpack also will have to be modeled, I'll have some concepts up somefully later today. I have some WIP of the weapons that I'll also post. Now, goodies!

I am sort of at a snag point with this model here. The pipes and tubes need to be made, but I do not know how to best go about it. I mean, I could just create some tubes, bend them into shape, and position them across his torso and arms, or I could try to make them from the body itself and keep him as a single object. Same goes for his backpack. I could make it as a seperate object and just place it on him, or I could attempt to construct it on him.

Another question is bothering me. What do I do about coloring him? I mean, zbrush has some color features, but I have little expirience it in so far, and I have never UV mapped or skinned a model before. Which would be easier? I know we are coming up on the due date really quickly, and I will only have access to the modeling program for a few more days, so time is sort of of the essence.

    Thanks for the help!

Alright loyal fanz. There is no way I can finish Sabbit before the end of the war (which may have already ended), but I am going to keep going on the model, learning as I go. This will be my last update until Monday, when I have my Max back. I am going to start sculpting the face as soon as I can, but I don't know if I can only work on one part of it at a time. At any rate, here's a WIP with some of the pipes and his gun. The backpack is being modeled currently, and is not pictured.
