Dominance War II - anton980

Hello to everyone! Thought I'd give it a go too. I drew this quick sketch today, but it's likely to change a bit.
Wanted to go with the Soviet style, keeping true to my heritage smile.gif

Concept1.jpg

The weapon support swiveling arm is in development, so what's on the concept drawing doesnt count, just a placeholder smile.gif

In the end I hope to get him to be quite a bit beefier, with better shielding and with a heavier gun, so the support for it is justified.

Thanks for looking!

Anton

Normally swivel mounts are under the weapon, so that the hips are carrying the weight. Just an FYI. laugh.gif

He looks just a bit too much like a regular grunt to me, rather than a Shadow. It might be because the helmet looks like a mass-produced item.
The shield is a cool idea, though!

Hey comradeJ and Valendar both make good points.

the Shield could be bigger, much bigger I'd say. Down to the knees and covers the front hand. You want the other soldiers to go "Oh shit the big guns here lets get the fuck outta here before we die" when they see him come out on the field.
• anton980
Thanks for comments everybody!

comradeJ - thanks, I agree about the helmet - will work something else out.

I'm sticking to the gun support that comes over the shoulder though. When I get a chance, I'll draw a few concepts of what it would look like.

Hito: the shield will get larger, but rather than extending it down to the legs, I'm thinking of going with separate pieces covering his left side (for mobility). That'll also throw symmetry off - the right side that is not facing the enemy will be much less protected.

Thanks again to everyone!

its still early, feel free to brainstorm about different ideas. Fast agile guy/girl, big lumbering guy/girl, teleporting guy/girl, flying guy/girl, there're alot of paths you can pick

after you get some ideas of possibilities in divergent directions, then you can look at them and see which you want to develope more and carry on to modeling and finish.

I started roughing out the model in 3D, and here's a preview.
Concept1a.jpg

He looks a little too medieval, I might change his armor a little bit to modernize him.
• anton980
Oh and I started on his weapon. The preview is here:

It's got a grenade launcher attached! Cant go wrong with that. smile.gif

thanks for watching and I am looking forward to comments and critiques!

fairly nice, at last a decent minigun with a large enough ammo sack for.. a 20 second burst.

minigun looks a bit standard.
heres an alternate design if you're interested:

I think the minigun looks pretty sweet as it. I know you said earlier that you didn't like the way the armor looked, but a giant clunky cannon goes perfect with it. As for making an "original" looking minigun, its just a bunch of barrels smashed together, so there is not REALLY a whole lot that can be done with it. I like the grenade launcher thing attached to the bottom. All in all, great concept so far, I particularly like the gun.

Hello to everyone! Got an update - a mid/high poly backpack with support arm. Next I'll spend some more time on the weapon to add detail. Here are the previews:

support3.jpg

support4.jpg

Dread: I dont like all the layered crap on his arm, but I'll keep it bulky.
• anton980
Added a few more details and rendered a better quality image so you can actually see those detail. Feedback very welcome!

I'm particularly interested in what you think about the way bullets look. Thanks!

aren't the ammo drums usually vertical on those guns, worn like a backpack? I suppose they're still machine fed, rather than gravity though?

Either way, its looking pretty awesome.

It's very nice modeling, but my only thought is that the engineering style of its component parts make it look like it could be built now, much more so than over a thousand years from now.
• anton980
Thank you everyone for comments!!

Rhinokey - thank you very much!

Spectaurs - I cant think of any place to put that vertical drum - I think it looks decent enough in this configuration.

Daz - I guess I got carried away with that.. Perhaps I'll modernize it a bit?

Now, VERY important question for all the knowledgeable people here! Do you think it would be acceptable to call the support arm a part of the soldier, and not have it listed as detachable piece? I dont think I can do all of that in 1000 polys and keep it look good frown.gif
I was thinking the chain gun would be a detachable, everything else is part of 6000 triangle setup. Any thoughts? Dont want to get disqualified over this...

what happens if the belt get snagged on a piece of clothing as it wraps around the butt of the dude?

one way to make things look more high tech is have high tech looking ammo. BMG.50 is a much too recognizeble as modern. Smoething with glowy bits like the UV rounds in underworld

anton, the way I see it, if its detachable, then it can be included in the equipment section of the polycount. If its attached, then it cant.

Hello everybody! It's been a while since my last update, but here it is!

02-27-2006_2.jpg

I'm pretty happy with the way feet turned out. I've still got almost 1500 polygons left to spare, so I'll refine some parts, especially the shielding on his left arm - it now looks very underdeveloped.
Weapon and ammo belt (detacheable pieces) are at exactly 1000 polygons combined, so that's good too.

Hito: he wont be that limber, his motion would be limited, so I'll come up with a way to keep ammo belt from snagging on anything.

Anyways, looking forward to hearing feedback! Thanks!

A friend of mine, Brian just put together a flash page out of a quick turntable animation I made.

You can view it by clicking THIS LINK

Use the scroll bar on the bottom to rotate the model left or right, or just press play to let it rotate on it's own. The file is a bit large, sorry about that smile.gif
Thanks again for looking!

Hito - thanks very much! I like the way the legs turned out too smile.gif

Amazing quality Anton! I am really looking forwards to seeing this piece completed!

P.S. And thanks to Brain for putting together the animation for us to see.
• anton980
Thanks for the kind words, Dread!

Ok, I am finished with modeling. I've enlarged his feet as per Hito's suggestion, touched up a few rough areas, unwrapped everything and here's a screenshot of a model:

Preview12a.jpg

Please ignore his head hitting the beam - once it's rigged it'll always be over his shoulder smile.gif

Weapon and ammo belt combined are exactly 1000 polys, model of the soldier is 4656. I'm about ready to start detailing him, so if anyone sees something horribly wrong with the model, please tell me now or forever hold your peace! Thanks in advance!
