I like the new theme. I think I can push myself to FINISH my entry this year. But, in order for me to do that, I have to come up with a character that I'm not likely to get bored of.
I'm sorry, I just found out about this today, otherwise I'd be ready. Concept very soon. I'm thinking of a solid, bottom heavy Samurai or a Sleek Light Zelot.

Feh! Not happy with where this is going. I was displeased with my "samurai" attempts, so I tried something that felt more natural.

Anyway, this probably isn't interesting enough to expand, so I'll keep coming up with ideas until I'm satasfied.

Thanks mop. But as for where they're going, I think I'm going to hold it off for now and try something different. I have to figure out what I want, and that may take a while.
    EDIT:
I 've been browsing the spacious interwebs and looked at some neat animal photos. I think I found something I'd like to work on...

I think I'll play around with the idea of a lizard man and see how it comes out.

Concept. I dunno, I think I could play with the shape of his face much much more. So far he seems generic, almost expectable for a lizard man.

    Suggestions?

Wow! Your thumbnails are surprisingly close to my idea in form.

Is that good or bad? smile.gif Can I see them? Update your thread, man!
I'm thinking I could give the thumbnails a few more goes. For now, though, I'd like to see where the lizard man takes me. When I run into a rut, I'll try something else.

Hmm, anotehr idea in the air... if not a lizard man, perhaps a cat man?

I say, for future reference, less human attributes, more beast baddassness.

I really like the forms in your thumbnails in your first post. Especially the bottom left one! The lizard man isn't a bad idea, but if you pushed it further so it isn't a standard lizard head on a humanoid body it may be the ticket. Maybe just take a few key elements from the lizard and just reshaped the head a little. Better yet, combine it with the cat!
    Cat shaped head, lizard features!

I agree. I need to build off of animal shapes and features rather than buidling off of human. Combining him with a cat... not a bad idea. I think what I want to do is make him sleek and lanky, but strong. I want him to be top heavy, giving the sensation that he is light on his feet, and yet powerful. With the cat shaped head like you mentioned, perhaps a shorter muzzle?

    sirfrancisdrake: Thank you. smile.gif

yknow, that actually looks pretty nice.
Just a bit too ancient in my opinion but nice!
Its a friendly looking lizard though.
    Make him EVIL!

hey makkon, how about something leaner, lankier, and more bottom-heavy? narrow shoulders and sinewy arms? could be a bit more sinister?

looking forward to seeing more, your paintings are great.

hey im likin these quick sketches like i said before. my only crit is theyre coming off as a bit tame.

your best friend is ref. id definitely check out some sweet looking lizards, and maybe combine them with a vicius looking fish or something. thats an easy way to come up with something cool and original and totally wicked.

its looking great so far, want to see what thse look like taken to the next level.

noritsune: I dunno. I'll give it a shot, but I've always really thought that top-heavy was a good way to express speed and power. I could perhaps add some stuff on his thighs to even it out, but I really want to stick with the heavy shoulders.

cholden: Hey, thanks smile.gif Glad you like it. smile.gif

sirfrancisdrake, I think you're onto something! I love both of those pics, simply awesome. It's interesting that fish and lizards, to a point, have similar facial structure.
I'll do some face studies, perhaps some sort of chart. I could try fish and cat variations, as well as some more dragon-like studies.

I can see you're kinda stuck with stuff. Like gauss has mentioned a few times, don't get married to your first girlfriend. If the lizard idea isn't working, try something else. Don't limit your creativity to just one concept. Push your ideas! Push shapes! Keep at it man.

Personally, I think you're putting yourself in a rut by going for such clear anthropomorphic concepts. Just take the gist of the animal and insert it into your concept instead of actually putting a lizard/dinosaur head on a humanoid body. It will look better and you won't be a slave to reference.

caseyjones: You're right, I ought not to narrow myself down to one possibility so early in development.

I've compiled some thumbnails and sketches, I just let meself loose with them (if I tried too hard to think, they looked like crap afterwards).

Sweet dude! There are some awesome sketches in there that would make amazing characters. I'm glad you didn't get too hung up on the lizard man idea to give other things a go. I think it paid off.
