GAME ON!
Here's a quick thumbnail sketch I did during lunch today, it's not very much but it's a start. Wanted to post mainly to bounce around some ideas.
I'll be making a brutal alien female. Not sure on the weapon, but possible some kind of daggers, sniper rifle, scepter or maybe even a combination of all 3.

domwarthumb-001.jpg

I think I need to add a bit more chunk and a bit more ugly. Will get to doing some more thumbs tonight to get shape and form before I get with the detailing.

    lovely rita, meter maid... ahem.
hey casey! hope all's going well in melbourne. i assumed that popawheelie might be a co-worker of yours, and i prove correct.
all i can say at this stage is that i'm glad to see you've posted some art to kick off with, but that you should also go on to do some thumbnails. i think it's okay to stick with the wide and venerable milieu of 'brutal alien chick' so why don't you just start with a basic female-ish silhouette, copy it about 12 times, and then start modifying both the silhouette in black, and then trying out different costume arrangements in white, much as you've thumbnailed above. i think it'd be a quick and easy way to explore some options you wouldn't otherwise consider.

Ninjas: Thanks dude, I'll do my best to get some leet concepts up worthy of rivaling yours.
popawheelie: I've already replied to you in your WIP thread :P
gauss: I don't actually know popawheelie, so you prove incorrect. But you're on the money about the thumbnails, which is what I'm working on now with no real success. But I'll keep fighting until I find something I'm happy with. Good to see that you're keeping a close eye on the contest's proceedings, and will look forward to more comments from you when I get some decent concepts up.

    Hey casey,

    nice sketches.
BTW i have betrayed polycount and moved to the 3D total they look like they need some help. Also ive been doing too many aliens and humanoid models for the past 1 year so i think its time to really crank up the notch and do a cyber / mecha model.

anyways hers the link to my concept at 3dtotal

Anyways say hi to everyone for me at BA. 3dtotal - shinja DOMINANCE WAR 2

Gav: I might try a few more thumbnails to expand on that tall and lanky guy and see what I come up with.
shinja: I sussed out your entry over at 3D Total, looking really nice man. Pitty we couldn't keep you here at Polycount, especially with that entry!
rooster: Thanks for the kind words dude, I think each thumbnail has a certain element that I like. So eventually I'll just rip it apart and use bits that I like to make a super character of awesome thumbnail goodness.
Eagle: Yeah, I'm starting to get places with these thumbs and having a clearer picture of what I want to make.

Here's a bunch of scribbles I just finished during my lunchbreak:

seforin: Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. I totally want my character to have a huge gun. But I'm leaning towards a sniper rifle of some kind like the one in my last sketch on the right. But if I opt for a large gun, it'll be a cannon of epic proportions.
As for the tank idea, vehicles aren't allowed and that would probably fall under being a vehicle.

Here's another bunch of random scribbles:
    domwarthumb-005.jpg

After doing all these thumbs and scribbles, I have a rough idea of what I want my character to look like. So rip apart stuff I have so far. Let me know which you like and which you hate so I don't choose the wrong bits.

Great work, man. I'm really digging the latest sketches, especially the top-left helmet. I have a thing for helmets, though -- just ask EQ, he'll tell you all about his helmet.

Also, anything with spiky teeth is evil, so you've pretty much nailed that. Spikes in general, really, will get you plenty far with that. Especially if they're bone -- helps if they're breaking flesh, too.

Anywho, I think the first (top to bottom) of the two heads (not helmets) in the latest is nicer, second one just feels sort of bland. First one seems a bit more primal and sophisticated at the same time. Bear with me on the terrible descriptions.

What you might want to try, anyhow, is see what you can do do avoid a sort of casing armor like on the second head. It probably seems like there's only so many different things you can do with the armor, but I'm sure there are better options. Maybe one that melds with the back of his skull, with fleshy antennae with glowing veins following the armor out? Don't know, but think!

I like the painted head, and adding the bone, and just more evil may turn into an awesome design. Have you decided on a body for that particular head shape? I like the top left of the scibbles, something mixed with the head may be an option. Good luck.

I tried a few variations on the blue guy above, but the best thing I got out of it looked too much like the Predator. So I decided to ditch that one.
Here's a new head I came up with, one I quite like and might actually stick to it. Still needs some more refining but I like where it's headed.

    Variation on the face/head:
    domwarthumb-007.jpg
    Variation on face armour:
    domwarthumb-008.jpg

From the first bunch I like #5 the most and might stick with that idea, though I'll revisit it some more and work the horns a little.
From the second bunch... I only like #2, the rest are pretty shit.
I might combine the two I like and do a few more tweaks here and there and see what I can come up with. Though I'll be doing some body concepts tonight.
C&C welcome... Paintovers too if anyone has any ideas for the heads or face armour.
Thanks in advance for any comments.

  • WickedFingers
Yes, I like the rough 2 and 5 of the head/face.
And I would say number 6 for the armour but it looks too much like the mouth of sauron (or at least I think)
    mouthofsauron.jpg

Progress is going good. Keep truckin!
  • Mark Dygert
On the first sheet I like 4, the eyes make it look really menacing. People may knock it for being too generic but I think its a keeper. The cyclops stuff smooths out the forehead and takes the anger and malice away from the face. It also shapes the brow to make him look confused or "simple".

On the second sheet I really like 6. Out of all the head sketches I like this one the best. Ahh but 2 has some really good aesthetic pieces that could play out nicely also... 4 Looks cool until you think about him opening his mouth. Would the top of his head roll back because it looks like his jaw is locked in place? Teeth aren't any good if you need a straw and blender to eat your enemies. I guess he could have broken his jaw in a previous battle and needed to have his jaw held in place... still if he can't use the coppers or open his mouth it takes some of the fun out of it?

I actually sort of like the cyclops look. Number 4 looks really generic, and has a very Gears of War Locust feel to it. And you can make a cyclops look menacing. One thing that really makes eyes look menacing is the heavy brow. If you afix a heavy brow over the single eyes, it can have the same feeling of hatred.

Rollin: Thanks dude, If you're referring to the #2 on the second pic, then yes. I think I'll be sticking with that one. Need more sketching!
WickedFingers: Thanks for that screenshot, it actually gave me an idea. Thanks for agreeing with me with the choices, it makes me feel better :P
Vig: I agree with the cyclops one looking "simple". I wanted to stay away from that one. You also mentioned that #4 looked generic, I agree with that part as well. I liked that one, but I don't think ill be going there unless I can make it more interesting.
As for the the masks/helmets, I was just exhausting the possibility of giving him one. I couldn't come up with anything I really liked besides #2, but even that one looks a little boring to me. I hate being so anal. Thanks for the comments though dude, I appreciate it.
dejawolf: Hahaha, dude. Thanks for the images. Funnily enough, that actually kinda helped.
Dread_Reaper: You're completely right about being able to make the cyclops look mean, but I think I'll still stay away from it unless I can do something really special with it.
Sectaurs: You have my permission to court her. Funny though, I think its probably the worst variation I did. It looks like a spaz fish, though I did want the eyes on the side to work. Might try it again and see where it takes me.

I'm having trouble coming up with some body types and possible armour. I think I need to do some more thumbs, anyone keen on some concept tag?

    TAG THIS!

    -caseyjones
  • Mark Dygert
The image in your first post gives me a few ideas.

    1) Revisit the chick idea, and make this big lug her pet/weapon. Kind of like a reverse princess Leigh/Jabba the Hut thing.

    2) He's a mount no hes a chariot, wait no he's going to kill you! She stands on his shoulders and likes to use his head to do the "Captain Morgan" pose, maybe she digs her heel into his head to piss him off and keep him annoyed. There could be a small platform grafted into his spine/back or just strapped to his back. Thick hooks dig into his collar bones maybe Dargo from Farscape type rings). She uses them like horse reigns and for balance.

    3) King Kong didn't die he just lost some hair and turned meaner. Turn her into his plaything, he can either carry her around and fight like Kong did (one of the coolest fight scenes around) or he chains her to his belt and she just has to follow him around. OR he keeps her in a cage that dangles from his big war axe like trophy. She could be wearing a uniform from one of our enemies, hehe...

No time for tags today but hopefully that will get the juices flowin'

Thanks for the comments Vig, it did toss around a few ideas and things got percolating. I've been sketching flatout for ideas but didn't want to post anything until I had a final concept.
Still no final idea, but here's something I've been sketching in mud (using Arsh's basemesh) during my lunch breaks at work. Still not happy with the idea, but its something.
Any help pushing my ideas would be great. I'm all for paintovers or some concept tag.

Thanks for the comments Davision3D, though I'm pretty much scrapping that guy. It was just a quick sketch to get some forms and ideas for armour.
I will keep those things in the forehead and I'll try the pipes flowing under the skin idea as well.
Here's another quick sketch I did during my lunch break (based off something I scribbled down on the train ride home last night). I'm liking the proportions of this more than the last guy and will stick with the head concepts I did a few posts back. More soon.

Thanks for the paintover dude, I really like the idea for the nostrils. I wasn't going to give him a nose of any kind but now I think I'm going to have to because I like the look of that.
Now that I've finished playing through Gears I think I can get off the xbox and get into Photoshop this weekend and knock up a final concept so I can actually start a proper base for the sculpt. Just having trouble with coming up with a solid style for the armour.

Well, I was pretty much about ready to throw in the towel. All I really have in terms of a concept is that head and with less than 2 weeks to go I don't think I'm going to be able to nut out a final concept that I'll be happy with and then get the mofo finished.
