so let's start by making time right about now, sooner rather than later! 15 minutes for some basic thumbnails to get the ball rolling... not too difficult, eh?
Seconded. I was thinking, "hmm, these are pretty cool sketches". Then BAM, that one floors me. I'd like to see some more fleshing out of this kind of character with the decorative armor and long planar bits.
yeah thats pretty much the one that captures the feel of what we are doing, The others are kind of just playing and refinement, brainstorming and stuff. We are hoping to do a lot of intricate relief work and patterning, Mike is more the concept guy, well seeing as how its his job and all I guess that makes sense, but I think we're meshing really well idea wise. Now he will do the color comps and flesh out the hardcore detail so I can start modeling in the next couple days. We're lovin this. As for the goodness, wait for the color and reliefs, we are thinking old school medieval stuff, demons devouring sinners and bones etc. Its a comin.
I really like these concepts. Really solid and intricate. But I think they are a little too intricate in some of the designs, it's giving off a very Roman feel which yells Ancients to me. Anyone else getting the same impression, or am I just being an ass and jealous of awesome concepts?
hot stuff. i like the direction its going although i have to agree it doesn't really feel "covert ops" to me. In which case half the forum is off the mark:D GO mythic employees GO!
thanks for the kind words and especially the concerns.
I definitely agree he looks a little good. so ill be working on making him look nice and evil tonight. The color i think will help there, but when it comes down it, silhouette is just as important and probably moreso.
As far as the covert ops thing goes, i dont remember reading in the brief that they had to be, i just think thats the way most people are going.
Me and noonie both wanted to do something different from the typical Splinter Cell stealth man which seems to dominate current stealthy-man/future soldier ideas.
keep the crits coming, i took these to heart and will be working on Mk 2 tonight
why make him more evil looking? the brief clearly states that deception is allowed, and having him look like the enemy and then shooting their nuts off would be deceptive and evil.
I think our textures will help the overall feeling for the ominous nature at the least. Anyone have any good ref sites for cool twisted reliefs and the like?
I think the feel we are looking at wont be very 'covert-ish' overall though, right now the rough idea is that these are essentially watchers. When PC takes over a planet they seed the atmosphere with mini drop pods that are self contained and form a shell around our troop leaving only his face exposed. They then watch the course of events over the planet in isolation, studying for weaknesses and slowly going mad. When a planet rebels or begins an uprising they activate the thrusters and rain down from the sky then begin their massacre of the planet. Meh, thats the rough background, Ill explain more later. For the most part theyre an elite troop type that specializes in planet extermination and recon.
*ahem* yeah Ill totally take mock credit for all these awesome concepts... Im so good I draw them with another persons body. Oh yeah. I like your clean up though Mike. Ill try to finish banging out a basic mesh tonight so I can start hitting those details. thanks for the compliments in all seriousness guys, both Mike and I are pretty excited to see how this one turns out.
Alright, been a bit busy but we got around to some rough color comps. Sirfrancisdrake will be working through pulling out the things we like in these and the pretty final concepts throughout the week but heres what we have so far.
you guys are doing awesome! i agree with most of the people on the sgda forum. the wings are really stealing the attention from the badass armor. if you're attached to the idea i would definitely down play the wings with the texture colors. damn, you work quick.
yeah, this is very cool, but i agree with the crits about the wings - personally i'd much rather see a really interesting and intricate armour shape/style/design than clich

i also gave the detail on his armor plate a shot. its not going to be that exact design, but it'll end up looking similar.
ill be doing lots more of these in order to flesh everything out.

We should coordinate, I'm going insectified as well.

H.R. Giger Landscape series come to mind when I think of twisted reliefs.
and heres the update on my playing with the mesh. Still needs a ton of cleanup but I think its coming along. All feedback is welcome.
This would mean the body armour takes priority and the wings can be textured with an alpha and some nice effects and not need many polys?
