So, eat 1500 calories and run 6 miles a day at a 7-minute pace. For a 200 pound guy, that's about 800 calories. That leaves 700 calories for your body to get by on the rest of the day, and dedicated weight training is off the curriculum altogether. This sounds like a fitness program for Skeletor. Perhaps all that's why He-Man always kicks his ass...
TGZ, One thing I forgot, since your a vegetarian you might not be getting enough protein, (have I harped protein intake enough? I don't think so). If your body has trouble getting what it needs to make muscle, and muscles burn calories, guess where those calories go... Its a pretty common problem for "healthy no meat types". Your body doesn't need to consume animal fat to make fat.
Since you're local you MIGHT be interested in a place I have gone to for a while Northwest Center for Optimal Health. Dr Pournadeali is a Naturopathic Dr and before you get all freaked out thinking hes going rub tea leaves all over your ass and make you plant beans under a full moon, know that he is just like every other Dr except he can't prescribe narcotics. Basicaly he believes that modern pharmaceutical drugs aren't the answer to every little thing.
He Isn't about taking care of you when you're sick, shoving a prescription in your hand and pushing you out the door. But helping you make you as healthy as you can be in every aspect of your life. Dr P has a very common sense approach and is very through. They personalize the care you get and almost force you to take an active roll in your health, and above all he actually cares if you're healthy.
They are more about educating you so you can keep yourself healthier and don't need to see the Dr as much. I can't say enough good things about the place, but I've probably droned on long enough so I'll shut it =P
At current i walk to work 1 mile in the morning, then home after work. When at the gym what speed should i go at?
Also i like the sound of gir's diet with the addition of a multi vitamin and juice drinks.
what i currently eat rite now is, breakfast an english muffin, lunch a sandwich, grilled cheese and fries, or burito, for dinner pastas, salads, vegi burgers and fries, and others.

the exercise was merely a suggestion, but the diet is extremely sound.
why do you think military rations are designed to last 48 hours and have 3000 calories?
invest in a smoothie maker, i love banana + strawberry smoothies. they contain a lot of complex, and simple carbs, and they help fill you up. i've even started putting my musli in the damned thing in the morning, it's easier to drink than it is to eat hahaha.

You want to walk to burn fat, not run. You have to reach your target heart rate, and running will go way over that.
[/ QUOTE ]
So if you run, you won't lose fat? Okay, say I do some interval sprinting for 20 minutes, which raises my metabolism for hours. What is my body using for fuel? And don't say blood sugar, I burned all of the glycogen up while sprinting.
While you're researching your answer, also find me some pictures of fat sprinters. I guarantee I can find pictures of fat walkers...

Yes, extremely sound if you want to look like Skeletor. Go look up the basal metabolic rate of a 25 year old male of average height and weight. It'll be more than 1500, I guarantee it.

Ignoring the fact that a typical MRE has just 1200 calories and not the 3000 you say (Wikipeda 4TW), I don't think you've got that concept right at all. 1500 calories a day, for a soldier with a full kit and in combat conditions? That's starvation level.

Verm: I wasn't doing any weight training, so I had no way of really monitering my muscle weight. I just didn't notice any.
TGZ: I would cut back what you are eating now a little and see how you feel. I was a vegetarian for a couple years and I ate a lot of pasta. Pasta is not very good for you. You can replace that with some beans (although not much, like 1/4 cup) and cheese and corn tortillas-- which is pretty good protein-wise. Veggie burger is good (you can try some of the higher protein ones-- I think Boca burgers have TVP if you can stomach them). Also eggs and toast.
You could also try doing some push-up and sit-ups after you get back from your job. You really don't need to lose so much, so running a slight calorie defecit will be enough to reach your goals.
[edit] Verm: About lowering your activity level when you cut calories; When I cut calories I usually tend to sleep a bit more. I may not have the energy to go out and do something that I otherwise would have, etc. It is not just about keeping up on exercise periods. That is only a small portion of you activity in a day.

There, I looked it up. It's your turn, wow me with science.
[/ QUOTE ]DUDE I DONT NEED TO LOOK IT UP yes any kind of cardio will burn fat. the IDEAL way is your target heart rate. Do you think im an idiot? I dedicated my life to training and diet for 5 years...i know from experiance, not from reading crap on my computer....How many times have you been to the gym...i really want to know now....like whats your problem?
just as a point, i'm not american, and would not assume anything about their military (other than the unit i was in had to train a platoon of your so called "best" in PT.)
that is quite a resourceful site, it is hosted by ex forces people, the majority of which are ex Marine, or SAS. It is the site i used for a year before i went into marine training. http://www.mfat.co.uk/rm.php?page=rm1
that page in particular was extremely useful.
one thing that i did before running the PRMC (potential royal marine course), which is literally 3 days of hell at the fitness level most people enter at, was to train with a corporal who was already in the marines for 15 years.
the best exercise we did, twice a week, was nicknamed "ton-ups". because by the end of it you had done over 100 reps of a multitude of exercises. and believe me, you won't be able to move the next day after the first couple of attempts. oh, and expect to throw up a few times, it's all good baby!!!
it goes like this:
10 half-sit ups
20 meter sprint, 10 half-sit ups, 10 full sit ups
20 meter sprint, 10 half sit ups, 10 full sit ups, 10 crunches
add the following exercises to the end, making sure you do a 20 meter sprint in between:
wide arm push ups,
standard push ups,
close arm (hands together under your chest) pushups,
squats
lunges
squat thrusts
pull ups
you should have just done 10 different exercises, with over 100 reps of the easiest, and 10 reps of the most difficult. i was advised that rather than adding reps, add distance to your sprints once you start getting really into it.
as for the calorie burnup, that exercise will easily demolish 1500, but that is the point, you burn off SO much fat doing it. and since you shouldn't be exercising the next day, you can restore your calorie level anyway.
I'll have to try to find the source later. Aerobic exercise is good for boosting your metabolism as your doing it and a bit after (about half an hour or so according to the research). Exercise such as weight training is supposed to boost your metabolism for up to 16 hours.
So a good start in the morning would be hauling your ass out of bed (ugh, I hate that), do some weights for a bit, shower and breakfast, then off to work. Then a proper workout later when you get home.
At the moment I'm in more of a 'convenience' stage. I've got my weights in the garage, I just wander in here and there throughout the day and do a set of a few different lifts. Even when getting dinner ready, like when I've just put something in the microwave or pan. Just wander in, do some lifts, then back to the kitchen.

Would that plus a bowl of grape-nuts be a sound idea for breakfast?
don't take me to be some expert dietician though. i'm about to go cook some bacon, hash browns, beans, eggs, and frikandelen :P
