i fear you might have to find yourself back at the drawing board at some point soon given how far you've come with this design... but maybe, maybe not. if you're no good at drawing like you say, roughing things out in 3D is a good way to go. but keep it rough, though, like if you were sketching with a pencil--between the mudbox and easy-to-do photoshop manipulations, you should be able to iron out a quality concept.
right now it looks like an interesting character, but not really winner material. it needs to be more imposing, more impressive, have more immediate appeal. it'll be crowded field at the end of this competition--you need to do all that you can to make your design attract and retain attention. good luck, and keep us updated!
trying to get the side view alright, not really happy with it yet
I think I need to move the shoulders a bit more to the back but other suggestions will be greatly appreciated
hm not sure.. i preverd the first legs and body-stile.. maybe you could push the initial design in the direction of an insect ?! maybe a combo from human and insect?!
(keeping the legs and the arms and changing the torso/head?!?!)
but try to do some thumbs.. they are easy and fast to do and they help a lot
and if you don´t try you can´t get better
keep going!!
Woah, my thread is already at the third page :O
time to bump it back up to the first page
I've just made a concept for the head part, I think I'll go for a more exo- skeleton look
Hi thefatladysings, my thread needs some more visitors too
I think that it's too early to start modelling, You should still try doing some more concepts. If you ask me, I prefer legs and armor (?) from first concept. Now he looks like generic alien soldier. Any idea who is he?, what he does? What's his speciality? Think about it before You get to modelling. Actually You should read ANY of general gauss's posts to get an idea of what I mean.
I see where you are going with the design, and I like it. the legs however seem a bit too thin for a suit of that large upper size. I think you are on the rigth track with the organic shapes and earth tones though. Good luck!
kept the legs the same size and made the torso a bit smaller
still need to get the front view of it right, I think you can still see a bit of it on the left side of the scan. needless to say that it was a complete failure

first off-- organic FTW
as for the side view, I would lurch him forward a little bit and pull the arm sockets back some. anything that creates a strong diagonal line backwards makes it look as if the model is falling over this one looks heavy up top and tipping so maybe you could also introduce some more form/mass to the buttox area. Imagine rotating the entire side view from the included picture about 15-20 degrees counter clockwise and it'll be great. Your balance issue will be solved .
Great googly moogly! That head is sweet! I am glad you went away from the human head, because that reptilian head just seems to fit so much better. The organic nature of the suit seems to be mimiced in the natural ridges of the face. Great work!
Try to avoid muscles on the armor, without them and with some interesting shapes it will look a lot more original.
ps. I'm planning to discard my entry since I lost all motivation I got after looking at other's pieces and seeing that I don't have too much feedback in my thread (besides few people who helped, I'm glad for them). Or maybye I'll get some funky ideas and motivation suddenly.

It's supposed to be some kind of exoskeleton armor. (I didn't touch the head yet, it probably won't be human)
paintovers are welcome
anyway, made it a bit darker and added some green and browns

Trying out a few different weapons, no ideas for the torso yet though

I just made a doodle of the head in mudbox, I kinda like the lizard head
I think I'll combine the torso from the concept you just quoted with the legs from my last pencil sketch

otherwise, lookin' cool! i do not have much to crit!
torso concept #2
ps. I could really use some criticism
edit* meh, colors are too bright again, gimme a sec and I'll fix it
