Gotta love huuuge sniper rifles. but the dude needs to be taller, a lot taller. he looks like a midget now. I'd also suggest moving the legs on the rifle further forward, to balance its pivot point.
yours is definitely one of the most Hotly Anticipated Dominance War Entries of 2007, as judged by DJ Gauss' Top 20 Countdown. you're off to a great start and, i daresay, the most content of any of the entry threads posted so far for our team. which is awesome.
but need i refer to the advice i've been giving all these green greenies? bust out some thumbnails, man! i know you're going to put some really impressive care and effort into entry, whatever it ends up being, so that's all the more reason to take the time to find just the right choice for you. i like your first character, but i think MoP's right about the feet; and generally speaking, you just need to play around with the form language a whole lot more.
jostle and rearrange the elements.. take stuff away, put it back, stretch him out, squash him down... big evil dude with a pile 'o' skulls is <u>never</u> a bad way to go, so think about the most dynamic ways you can realize that idea. but again, don't get married to your first girlfriend, right? take time to unlock all the various different ideas you've got kicking around via thumbnails...you've got enough winning entry ideas to spare for more than half the polycount team, i just know it. keep up the good work man
edit: oh snap, this guy's got more content up in the time it takes gauss to sputter out a reply! i really really dig the mimic critter idea and much of the execution--could very definitely be a winner. but as i was just saying, especially with this idea, be sure you take a variety of approaches to all aspects--how the critter is put together, its coloration, etc. etc... but you've got probably your strongest start yet, though. the pose is particularly evocative, even if the mimic-man camo itself should probably look a little more soldier-y and futuristic. but it's very nearly solid gold material, keep it up!
That mimic is great, allthough seeing as how we're supposed to be the human (and alien) faction, that might not be the most effective disguise.
nice style to it though, and i love the little head peaking out.
I am starting to get my art skillz back... it is taking some time though. Now that this one is done I think I need to go back and see about doing some of those thumbnails... still, I am pretty happy with this one. I'm just not sure it is a "winning" concept.
The idea was to go back to basics. Start with a very basic dude and layer up matching details on everything to try and bring it together.
I love both the biker guy and the awsome guy with the "swordish" hands. Although I think the bike could be done a tad more 3106 instead of 2100. but very nice done Ninjas.
The Scout was fun to do but I think I am going to revisit some of the other ideas in the thread. Especially the Mimic which I think could be 200% cooler than the existing concept.
I also just saw that the motorcycle wouldn't be alowed in the rules anyway. Stay tuned though, since I am just getting warmed up!
Okay, I am getting into the real concepting now. I have 3 main ideas each of which I think are pretty good. I have done and tossed out half a dozen different mimic WIPs and this one I think is finally starting to go in the right direction, although is missing the quality of the earlier drawing.
Mimic: Born from a race of sentient super-predators, he is the only one of his race that have been captured alive. While the mimics have not yet developed technology (due to their solitary nature), they are able to understand and use it.
God-Soldier: Equiped with a state-of-the-art device that accelerates atoms that are entangled with atoms implanted in his brain, he is able to see multiple near futures and avoid taking actions that will result in his death. The side effects of constantly seeing your own death in many futures at once are severe.
The God Soldier is too close to Midnighter from The Authority which is Warren Elsis's take on the JLA. Basically Midnighter is Batman and can calculate every move in every fight before its been fought. He's also married to Apollo (Supperman).
Raining on the parade more (but not to discourage).
The mimic idea isn't totally new either, remember Mimic the movie? Or what about Men In Black? I've even had an idea for years its a root/organic based character that hallows out dead bodies and attempts to use them to gain entry to places.
Does this mean you should drop both ideas? HELL NO, the mimic idea is still the coolest of the bunch and well on its way to being in the top 10. The God Soldier is a nifty idea but standing next to the mimic it loses.
even invasion of the body snatchers use the mimic idea, you can find a source to every concept...that said, I think the mimic is deifnitely the best, it suits the assassin perfectly (especially in that first concept of it you did) the others are cool too.
Hehe, yes, certainly these ideas are not at all original. At most I would credit myself with some small degree of originality in combining different influences into these particular designs.
I have one more architype that I was planning on putting up sometime today.
She's pretty similar to my design, Ninjas, albeit with greater consideration for good character design and whatnot. Perhaps a little too close. While I know you're not copying me and I'm not copying you, the judges are more likely to wonder about such things. I don't know whether it'll actually effect judging at all but its something to consider. This isn't to say that you should necessarily be the one to change. http://boards.polycount.net/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=180244&an=0&page=0#Post180244
What do you think?
You've been pretty quiet this Dominance War Ninjas, when last year no one could stop the constant flow of concepts coming from you.
Your final concept is looking nice though. So get cranking and start some modelling! Not much time left (not that I can talk, I'm still concepting).
Thanks guys! Yeah, I have been pretty busy with contract work recently, but I was also having some problems coming up with this design. I think I can still make it!

I know what you mean, the only part of my concept I'm happy with is the head. Everything else I'm stuck on. Unless I can get a final concept by Wednesday, no way am I getting it done. No gauss around for concept tag :P
But I think you've got this one in the bag.

cool start!
not sure about the feet style, looks like he's sinking into the ground... liking the swoopy shapes though
I'm going to move on to another concept now.
we are so not getting ANY work done this month!!
hahahahaha

its what all class C mimics use in the future.
