yea Ive seen your stuff to kinda looking to see what your gonna toss out in this comp, best of luck my friend also I think if head 5 connected to body 3's chest area it would be kinda cool, just a suggestion
lol here i am still trying to figure how that clean mesh you call Meryl..
LOVE your Jedi Knight models man!
Can't wait to see what you make!
I'd go with concept nr 1 btw, looks a like sneaky and quick alien.
hey man, much like snowfly i am very, very stoked to see what you crank out for this compo.
as to your thumbnails--the answer is that you need more of them you're giving yourself an artificially narrow set of alternatives, at this point. even though you'd likely develop any one of these into something kick-ass, it'll be even more kick-ass if you take your time. given your portfolio, both your sketch ability to your finished models, i'd really like to see you do a human. seems like it'd go with your strong points as an artist.
the human thumbs i'm particularly envious of, btw; got a great confidence and decisiveness to how you make your lines.
in terms of the design, i'll repeat what i told kream in his thread, which is that you need to be careful of boxing yourself in too much with genre cliches because of the loaded wording in the brief. you should really only be concerning yourself with making a really badass looking character with strong, exciting shapes on and within the silhouette at this point, don't worry about whether the gear is tactical or sneaky enough. that kind of shit is more than easy enough to shoehorn in at a later point; keep your priorities straight.
but it's likely you won't need much peptalk from the likes of me--your entry will be one to watch, mark my words! keep us posted, man.
thanks guys.
GAUSS, YOU ROCK! concepting is probably my weakest point so i appreciate the help.
i started fleshing out one of the earlier concepts, tear it apart guys.
Hey Mike, I like how its going so far but I would stay away from the last image. I dont think it has enough interest in it yet and if I were you I would play to your strengths like Gauss said. Your humans are dope and I think they have far better shapes and ideas flowing in them right now. Keep it up man, cant wait to see how your stuff turns out.
Noonie makes a valid point. With so many people entering this contest, you'd want your character to stand out and in a good way. Great start though. I really like what's happening in #27 in your thumbnail sketch.
sup guys.
still trying to feel this one out
i was thinking about scraping the last guy as a pet, though it definitely doesnt match together with the latest one.
your thumbs got the shapes
your drawings start to lose them.. #27 has the "general" feel to it.. maybe a little cheesy but it i think it works..
i think many of your designs feel thin, very tight, no major masses. perhaps push the proportions? in #16 i see someone with a huge trunk/shoulder/pecto area, but your drawing reminds me of of a teenage punk rather than an indestructible war leader http://members.xoom.alice.it/_XOOM/katrinchen/volume1/brom_battle_lord.jpg
WOOOOOOOOOO. whats up man, fancy to see you here. The thumbs are looking good, I would exaggerate the shapes just a bit more as far as bulkyness and length of limbs. I agree with you #27 wasnt the best, actually I think #28 has a very interesting shape. keep it up man. POLYCOUNT ROCKS!!!
word up to my homies
help appreciated roomie delish, now get that postcount up
im liking the latest concept the best too. i gonna do a greeble pass on him later.
nice to see you found your password c.bum, im looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Hey mike, I like the latest but I kinda feel like it lacks some pop, its very smooth but it doesnt have that special something to set it apart. I hadnt noticed the sketch#28 before, I dig that one too, good catch c.bum.
thanks for the comments people. this is probably the most concepting i have ever had to do, and im learning volumes from it. Im liking every iteration better and better. Ill get there eventually
I like the touch of bright green light coming from the right eye. Gives it a bit to take away from the muted colors. But altogether I like it. I don't mean to be a N00B but aren't we supposed to stay away from robotics in this contest? Just wondering.
Really cool armor man! The only thing is the hands. They seem so delicate next the rest of with awesome creature! Just a thought, perhaps making them a little more like the rest of the pic.
Ok i decide that this guy was too mechanical so i added some organics to the mix. I dont mean for those beefy arms to be the operators arms but biomechanical arms belonging to the armor. Sorta like the mgs4 metal gears: they are robots, but their legs are made of organic tissue. I also removed the glass helm so the human element doesn't get lost. I'm definately going to revisit the feet.
I think that's an inspired change of direction to spice things up a bit--your original teched up character design was excellent, in my opinion, but not a contest winner--it was the kit of a line soldier. Maybe a special ops soldier, but still not a one-of-a-kind. I think it's important to push the one-of-a-kind vibe in these kinds of competitions.
So I dig where you're going with it, but I'd say try another paintover of the model where you experiment with a different way of texturing the bio-arms. MGS4 is an excellent touchstone, but of course you don't want to just be thieving outright (not now, anyway, now that you've named your source ). I'm just saying that it's worthwhile playing with different textures and suggesting surface qualities while your messing about with a paintover.
Something like the suits in Gantz--not just shiny black muscle stuff, but a like-minded solution where you can play up the fact that the arms and legs just aren't robot bits that look organic, they're actually more organic to a degree. So something to help sell what they're about, and maybe something to heighten the contrast to the metal-only bits of his armor. Play with specularity, textures, smoothness and detailing or lack thereof, etc. Good luck and keep us posted! I'm particularly a fan of the gun design, looking forward to seeing that puppy finished.
Thanks gauss, I was hoping you would swing by. Yeah i was planning on making the organics rubber like to contrast with the metal parts. I'm going to give the same treatment to the legs.
update:
I tightened up the arm tendons and made them match arm muscles better. and did the same to the legs.
I didn't do very much concepting on his gun so i went back to it. I picked this shape out of a load of silhouettes. Im still going for an artillery like weapon.
I really wasn't sure about this at first, but I'm really digging the execution of it in 3D. I agree the face does seem a little strange, like he has a huge forehead. Unless you were going for that. Awesome work.

damn i cant decide!

sorry i dont have anything more productive than what i told you out loud. ha ha.
Or am I a N00B? :P
the leg is really poo right now.
anyone see any proportion discrepancies?
oops sorry gamefruit. Mmmm yeah im hoping it would be seen as high tech armor rather than robotics.
Is he human or alien, I just realised he has three fingers?

but maybe try to sharpen up the meta-forms (what a word..)
atm the stripes are bit loose and not so smooth like on the paintoverconcept.. liked that more

ams look better now!
love this one a loooot.. keep on faster faster faster
The face looks a bit strange, could just be me though
