This is only my second or third time with digital sculpting, so I just kinda played around with the 'make ugly' tool.
From a box:
Half brainstorming, half unrelated silo2 practice. I kinda like the idea of a generic lizardman character, but am treating this more as rough concept art than a start on my highpoly. If I do end up going with this design I'll probably sculpt again from a base mesh.
I would suggest using Silo to come up with a nice overall form for the whole character, rather than focusing on head and its details. That's what I liked about Silo - it's so easy to manipulate low poly model that just moving verts around and breaking up polies can lead to some very compelling shapes, which then you can detail and develop more. But for the start, just use it to come up with a strong silhouette, to explore the mass of your character, find balance and just create a shape that you will enjoy developing further. Don't even bother subdividing it. Think of it as making silhouette thumbs, but in 3D, so you can be sure that it's working from all the important angles. Good luck, soldier!
Assuming I do a normal mapped character, I'm going to have to use silo for details at some point. It's the only sculpting software I can afford, and I really don't want to box model my highpoly. I probably should do a bit more on the overall design, though.
hey, i finally get around to your thread like you requested, and it turns out fogmann's done my work for me she said what i'd say--if you're using a 3d package to sketch, then treat it as you ought a pencil sketch--keep the sketches quick and not very detailed. in this case, maybe use the same basic mesh with barely any detail at all, and save out different iterations where you rearrange the limbs, etc. should help. keep posting updates
Spending a bit more time on my lizardman idea, trying out some forms in lowpoly.
This was really spikey and bad, this is slowly getting there. Gonna do some more serious work on making the head okay tomorrow, then try out a bunch of ideas for the body.
hey ease up man. nobody gets far in life being a negative nancy--well, with the obvious exception of Negative Nancy herself, and her best-selling "12 Steps to Permanent Depression" self-hurt book.
the fact is that you've got a whole body modeled and mostly detailed--that's a good deal further along than even some of the most promising entries are so far. and you know what? a finished entry is going to beat the unfinished entries every single damn time.
not that you should rush, but i'm saying you're in a good position to continue to refine and polish this character so that if you're not happy with it now, you will be once you're finished. make this an opportunity to learn the high poly sculpting stuff and get the entry you want to see. joo can dooo eeet keep updating!
Gauss got it dead right. Positive attitude is vital. I got stressed with my entry yesterday so I just put it down and took my wife out on the town. When I opened it up again today things looked a lot better than yesterday and I was easily able to fix things I couldn't yesterday. Don't be discouraged by some of the other entrys, bare in mind that a lot of them are still in the sculpt stage and the low pollies aren't even done yet. Just focus on finishing your entry and as Gauss said, you'll be a lot futher along than probably half of the entrys.
Wish I'd had the time to add some equipment, but this will have to do. I'm happy enough with it, for my first next gen character (except for the completely inexcusable seams, of course,) but I really hope to do a lot better next year, assuming we have a third Dominance War.
I hope the Dominance War returns, as I won't have time to finish mine either. I know you don't have any more time, but if you have a minute, I would just say that you need to edit the color on the forearms. I'm not sure what it was supposed to be, but it doesn't look like anything really. Other than that, good for a first try!

On topic, I messed with the dinosuarman head idea a bit more:
Personally I kinda like 2 and 5. Any feedback?
Obviously need to refine the model a lot if I want to use it for my actual highpoly, hands and back are especially messy at the moment.
Save a few little issues with the fingers and lower back, I'm liking my first sculpting base mesh a lot.

With luck, highpoly done by monday.
Something more refined up later tonight, hopefully.
I thought it was cool.
(All very wipish and blocked out at the moment, on the head. Design feedback appreciated.)
Okay, I'm gonna just start editing these into the posts I already have. Blobby hair for massive lose, gonna see if I can sort that out soon.
Got a couple of hours to start on the armor. Going slow.

good going man, might be nice if the armour curved abit around his limbs. keep pushing!
Think I've figured it out. Hopefully I'll have everything UVd properly and normal mapped in another day or two.
Quickly losing interest.
