From George Broussard, posted on the 3DR DNF forum:
"I guess I'll reconfirm what I said last night. That's an in game, real-time shot of Duke standing in a random hallway. It was really done as a small teaser for a job ad on Gamasutra.com. Nothing more.
I'm glad some of you enjoyed it, and we'll show more later as we start to wake from our slumber and decide how best to show the game off."
Personally, I'm so far beyond caring about this game, I don't have any thoughts about the render itself. Just... meh. What does interest me is that 3DR, a company more legendary for its hype than its software, chooses *this* method to reintroduce Duke's current incarnation to the public.
Seriously, this is the first image of Duke since the 2001 E3 video, right? The first glimpse of DNF in more than half a decade comes as a microscopic gif attached to a Gamasutra article? I think George Broussard is actually just a spokesman for the company, and 3DR is actually run by monkeys.
For those keeping score at home, April 27th of this year will mark the ten year anniversary of the Duke Nukem Forever announcement.
I played through Duke3d lately and it still holds up pretty well gameplay wise.. I hope they do manage to recapture that old duke feel, with updated ideas and graphics..
HA! Real? It's real for this bajillionth version of the alpha! Just wait until the obscur tiny in game screenshot that hits the net in 2015! Now THAT will make you jizz yourself!

I can't imagine what it's like to work on the same assets over and over again to accomodate newer technology introduced into the game.

Man, I never considered that until now. Must really suck for the guys who've worked on it. I wonder how many of the original crew are still around from the first version of DNF? Poor bastards.
As for the screenshot, meh. The size doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me either. The only reason I can think of for making something promotional that small is to hide it's imperfections.
The screenshot like most people have suggested is most likely an action figure (I can't say for certain, but I'll go with the majority on this one).
I think the release of the "in-game screenshot" is just to get some attention back to the project. 3DR seem to do it a lot, anyone remember this from a while back: http://www.3drealms.com/duke4/dnf2600.html
I was looking forward to this game when I first heard about it and I even remember seeing an in-game video while I was still in highschool and was totally psyched. Now... Well I just don't give a shit anymore!
Duke Nukem Forever... Duke Nukem NEVER, am I right!
If/when DNF is ever released, I think it'll make for a great time-capsule thread on gaming boards. The "where were you..." retrospectives on when the game was announced (April 1997), when the engine switch to Epic's Unreal tech was made (June 1998), when the famous E3 video debuted (May 2001), when Broussard got into the pissing match with his publisher (May 2003)... actually, can George Broussard be said to have a publisher, since he doesn't make games? Anyway, it'll be fun to traipse through the decade of disaster that has been the DNF development.
Personally, I hope the game is never released. If it is released, I hope it's a flop of such intergalactic proportions that we all forget about Daikatana. The DNF development process has given us ten years of enjoyment, and there's imply no way the actual game could ever live up to that...
That, or similarly: the new My Bloody Valentine record.
Which possibly has a more amusing story tied to it with the getting kicked off of their record-label after having used up 1 million pounds of their money.
But yeah, i'm hoping it's an action-figure, because i don't like the looks of it.
I loved the video that was released a long time ago, though. With the old guy, in the deserty setting.
I really, really, really don't want to see another screenshot, preview or newspost about DNF until the fucking game gets released. 3DRealms should either finish it up or silently take everything about it with them into their graves.
I am a huge Duke Nukem fan, I've been waiting for this game ever since it was first announced in 1997. I still have the issues of PCGamer with Duke on the cover on display at my desk with a small sign, "9 years - Still Waiting", beside them.
I was excited when I heard that a screenshot had been released, but disappointed to find it was so small & vague... And still no release date in sight

It's finally going to happen!!
looks like a plastic action figure, with a monitor screen in the background. We'll imagine thats its a screenshot

I thought it was a joke too...I'm gonna say it's an action figure and agree.
And why the hell should they release a screenshot of a game 10 years in development on gamasutra with 200px width?
Ohhhh guerrilla marketing...
Still, a screenshot of the main character with a blurry background does not mean that they are actually anywhere close to finishing it...

He's NOT lying. It DOES exist.
Not holding my breath for this one, but it does look like next-gen plastic to me. Can see why people might think it's an action figure.
