vertexpaint slowness

does anyone know a way to speed up vertex paint in max? im trying to paint on a 30k mesh which is otherwise lightning fast but vertexpaint chuggs like hell.. I wouldnt have assumed it to be such a processor intensive process??

Try adding a Turn to Mesh modifier, then the Vertex Paint mod on top of that?
