Here is my second model with normal maps. She is a task for school. Lives in the 15th century in a freezing cold climate and is an assassin. Hope you like it !
This looks pretty good for your second nomral mapped character. The only other thing I'd add besides what has already been said, is that the textures are a little on the bland side. I'd try adding a little color and if you really want to stick to the gray then at least add some subtle shadows where things overlap and such. You have slight color variations in your concept that are not in the model, adding those would help a lot as well. Great job overall.
i know about the mitten problem, but at the same time who would want to expose their fingers in say -20 degrees celsius.
The subtle shadows are in the ambient occlussion map. They arent all too visible with such a low ambient light though
Great concept. The model is good, but it doesn't quite compare. For example the cloth looks much thicker in the model(probably more realistic since she lives in the freezing cold), but it lacks any real detail, such as the nice wrinkles in the concept. Also some of the nice stuff from the concept has been left out, like the brown material found on the edges of the gloves, boots and head wrappings. Also some of the straps, and the red edges on the cloth are hardly visible in the model. Those details are what make the concept look good, but they are missing in the model.
Technically the model is very good, it just not completely true to the concept.
Keep up the good work though!
I agree with most of what's been posted so far. Specifically the differences in design from your concept to finished model. The concept is way cool, and the model is a bit lacking in the dynamic department. Really try to nail the look and feel you set out for yourself in the concept sheet. Also, never render with a solid black background.
Really the model looks very little like the concept, and deviated in all the ways that made it less cool to look at.
you guys are absolutely right about the likeness with the concept. I feel i have stressed this one out and unfortunately i dont have time to change it right now (so many things to do until january). I really appreciate all of your comments and will try not to make the same mistake on my next model
My next model will be somekind of steelworker from the 19th century. I'll make a new thread for it when the times comes.
if there is snow all over the canvas-like material (assuming that is what the white stuff is), there should probably be some darker, wet-cloth type colors in there to tie it together. Otherwise it kinda looks like flour.
the red doesnt pop quite like it does in the concept... kinda think that could help it a bit. Why did you ditch the asymetry? it added a lot of flavor!

Which ever you feel comfortable with.
Other than that looks like the concept except for those parts that you have changed.
I really like your normalmap.
