I've seen this heiligenschein from an airplane window many times, when the plane's shadow is cast onto the cloud deck. Very cool effect.
For an engine to support the shadow part of the effect, it would need very high resolution shadow-casting. Not practical. Also not practical from the specular side of things... the normals would have to be very tightly packed for enough of them to be pointing at the light/you, and the texel resolution would also have to be very high I think.
