Hi guys! I have frustrated myself over and over again with not being able to produce any sort of decent texture at all, and having no idea why, I keep hacking away untill even photoshop locks itself with an error bar coming up saying 'Sorry, we can't let you do that, n00b.'
So, I think I found the root of the problem. I never really started at the beginning. I would just like to know where I can find some really simple tuts. Easy to follow, to just really get me learning good techniques ect ect.
Any help would be hot.
Thanks guys!

Texturing workflow:
set up actions in photoshop that:
hide uv template
unhide uv template
update texture
Find photos of materials that look or are what you plan to texture. You can use them as overlays or texture base. Take a look at a photo retouching tutorial so you learn how to set up the stamp tool to use for painting. I'm not implying that you don't how to use Photoshop by that statement, it's always helpful to see how others do things since it will give you more ideas on how to use the tools.
As you paint check your model for seams and that the details line up. After a few hours you are done.

The first one I got is fucking rubbish (serves me right for order it without researching it properly ). It's a really old book and the cover looks pathetic, so I knew right away the book would be shit. It's called "The Darkside of Texturing" or some shit... Most expensive paperweight I've ever bought. It's good if you are a total fucking nub stuck in the mid to late 90s trying to break into the games industry.
The second book "3D Game Textures" isn't too bad. I've only had a flick through and it does go into some detail about texturing and how to actually do decent textures. The front cover on this one actually looks decent! It even had some technical tips on why you'd texture things a certain way and how you could optimize your texture usage. But this book mainly focuses on environment stuff more than characters.
It's not the greatest book, but I picked up one or two things from it so far.
My biggest suggestion is to just paint and experiment. Mess with layer overlays, try new brushes, change your brush settings. No matter how good a tutorial is, it's going to be useless to you unless you actually get in there yourself and try shit out.
Practice makes perfect.
