It's that time of year again and I'd like to get some cool graphic novels for some friends, but I don't really know that many. Can anyone recommend some particularly good ones?
I've just started reading Sandman by Neil Gaiman. It's a pretty big series and comes in a hardcover set as well. I've been enjoying it so far. I'm pretty nub when it comes to comics as I haven't read much stuff.
But Sandman is worth sussing out.
Sandman's good but you really need to read em all...Watchmen...Joss Whedons Astonishing X-men, Wolverines Origins, a heap of the Hellboy books, Dark Knight Returns, The Walking Dead..(just read all of these up to the most recent very cool)..too many dude depends on personal preference....
Minute of Angle is pretty badass, but expect to wait a long time between issues, what with it being a one-man side-project. Come to think of it, I need to get around to ordering the second issue.
I`m pretty unknowledgeable in this too, but I would recommend V for Vendetta, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Sandman, Books of Magic, Slaine (Bisley versions).

Anything illustrated by Bernie Wrightson for pure art pleasure.
Walking Dead series
Watchmen
V for Vendetta
Preacher series
Hellblazer (selection)
Batman - Dark Knight Returns
Halo Jones
Transmetropoliton
Tom Strong Book 1
Ministry of Space
Totally forgot Ultimates 2 that was a fun read. Rising Stars started out good but ended weakly I reckon. Have just picked up Transmetropoliton an it seems pretty cool so far.
i don't know if its considered a graphic novel but I'd recommend the volume collections of Invincible, it is like Superman with a twist, and a darn good read with awesome art work, my favorite comic in a while.
along the superman lines, there is one called "Secret Identity" that I really liked. Kind of like an alternate reality where there is a kid named Clark Kent, and everybody makes fun of him cause he has the same name as Superman's alter ego (this world is like our own where Superman is a fictional Character). But it turns out he does get superman's powers and it tells of his life into old age and how he deals with his powers while still haveing a normal life (marriage, kids, career) I thought it was a cool take on Superman.
IMO Promethea becomes an occultist textbook a couple books in. I loved it at the beginning but then he had to get all obscure and difficult on me. It's like how From Hell hints at being a great thriller, but turns out to be a travelogue of 19th century London ...
Marvels is a great one-shot idea for friends who are into other Marvel books. Stormwatch and the Authority (but make sure you get books from Warren Ellis's run, for the latter) are highly recommended too!
I recently read Superman: Red Son Ascendant. It's a neat alternate take on the most played-out cliche of a hero since Hulk Hogan, "what if li'l Superman had crash-landed in the Soviet Union." It's a surprisingly good read, even when you get past the gimmick.
Hellblazer is pretty cool although I kind of lost interest after Rake at the Gates of Hell because Garth Ennis stopped writing it, if just hasn't had the same feeling ever since. The movie was shit though, as canon as the Dolph Lundgren Punisher.
Pride of Baghdad. A pride of lions are released from a zoo in Baghdad after it's hit by a bomb.
Nextwave - Agents of H.A.T.E. Warren Ellis' brilliantly funny take on superheroes.
Superman - Birthright. A retelling of Superman's origin.
The New Frontier. DC's heroes first join together to face a huge threat. Nice golden age style.
For just ridiculous over the top but fun art, check out Slaine: The Horned God by Simon Bisley. Dude is whacked. It might be a bit harder to find, but well worth it for the cracked out Frazetta-esque art style with a huge helping of gore.
