Err, he didn't make it up, I swear! There's been a chain of 3D related events to mark this day, or just celebrate greatness of 3D graphics, and it's been going on for 8 years, I think. For instance, there's Maya user gathering/networking event with some workshops and seminars and free food and what not. I almost went to the one held in Northern VA last year, but couldn't make it. There are some events this year also, like some listed on Autodesk site.
