at first I was thinking it was gonna be pretty shoddy. However, after seeing all the great reviews its been getting, im no longer so sure. Might have to see it.
Apparently I'm the only one that's watched all of Da Ali G Show, so I'll give everyone a tip: SEE THIS MOVIE! If you have anything resembling a sense of humor I think you'll love it. I'm going to see it with my friends this saturday!
I'm really excited about this one, just to see some scathing snide UK comedy again as it's been a while since Shaun of the dead and its still a while until Hot Fuzz.
I've caught the Borat act a few times in the UK and it's a guilty pleasure to anticipate being the only one laughing at many of the scenes in the cinema here again.
Aside from that , I love watching the bravery of Sascha as he risks exposing the bigotry and prejudice of the self nominated 'well to do's'
I'll probably go see this at some point. I tend to get a bit frustrated at some of the stupidity of some of the people, but I do want to see what he does next hehe.
Did anyone see the interview he did with some New York fashion designer, listen to the crap some of these people come out with, and the way he gets the pretentious prick at about 3:12 into the video to contradict him self continuosly.
I was really entertained. It was always going to be hard for it to live up to the hype. Heck some of the reviews on rottentomatoes say stuff like 'the funniest movie ever made'. I think my only slight disappointment stemmed from the fact that I'd probably seen the trailers and other material way too often beforehand. But shit, it was pretty bloody funny and extremely hard to watch at times. The two of them wrestling naked was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on film.
Potential spoiler:
I wonder exactly how much of it was setup and faked? Clearly the Pam Anderson stuff was along with the bear scaring the kids, and there were a couple of other scenes that had me wondering the same.
And shit, do those people (the old rodeo guy springs to mind) that showed themselves in a really ugly light have to provide permission to be shown in the movie or what? Curious to know what the law is here.

Yes, they have to sign a release, otherwise there's a potential for lawsuits. I'm sure the people have no idea what the footage is going to be used for, and they're probably offered some sort of compensation for signing the release.
Just like everyone who's in the Jackass movies (the bistanders). They have to sign saying they'll be in the movie. "We just made an ass out of you and ourselves. Here's $5,000 and sign this please."
Gail and I went to see the movie tonight @ 5:45PM and it was sold out all night.
It was pretty fuckin funny. Didnt live up to the freakish hype, but it was still a blast. Really a great job they did on this film. Bet it was awesome to work on!
I saw it last night, was bloody hilerious, but I never got round to seeing the ALi-G movie and unbelivably before that I never heard of this borat chap. Kinda caught me off guard, but yes it was funny and wrong on so many levels, but still a must-see.
I think its a very clever movie in how it is done,I mean oviously things were staged, but there was some moments when people really did seem to be caught unawares.
Great flick.. haven't laughed that hard at a movie in a long time.
I'm pretty sure a lot of which you might think was staged was actually real. Who knows.
My girlfriend and I were talking about the movie though. I mean obviously the movie is a success but knowing how hollywood will likely try and capitalize and make it into a movie franchise. How do they do the same style of movie when Borat is suddenly a huge star? Will they turn it into a straight up scripted comedy, like austin powers? Or maybe the next film would have to be the Ali-G or Bruno movie...
hilarious at times, but with hindsight i would have enjoyed it even more if i had drunk a few pints before going to the cinema. in the light of day it's nothing spectacular imo - nothing that lasts beyond the current media-hype in there.
My girlfriend and I went last night, and laughed to the point of agony. By the wrasslin' scene, I'd passed well into that stage of helpless, paralyzed laughter where what you're doing sounds less like laughter than an asthmatic, almost silent wheeeeze. I was doubled over, hoping I wouldn't throw up, secure in the knowledge that this movie could potentially kill me.
Daz, are you still in San Francisco? Did you happen to catch it at the Century? When we got there at 9:45 for the 10:20 showing, there was already a massive line which tripled in length by 10. The city loves its Borat!
How does this sound for a title: "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt"
I saw it and it was glorious. As Daz mentioned, the naked wrestling scene, while quite uncomfortable to watch, was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Glad to hear it's getting a wider release. When we left, reps from Universal were there finding out whether or not folks enjoyed the show. It was cool.

Actually they already made an ALI-G movie(called Ali-G indahouse) 4 years ago, it was quite succesfull over here in Europe... Perhaps that was the motivation to make the borat movie with a USA setting.
Also, Borat also makes an appearance in the ALI G movie
I'm not so sure Ali G would work now, too many people know about him, but then again most of the people in fashion have their heads up their own asses and are high on blow, so who knows. It's almost like making fun of the retarded, painful to watch but still funny.
the best part is that he and his 'director' speak in hebrew to each other, with a russian type accent, making it seem like an unknown kazakh language to americans
LOLLERS
I'm totally with Malekyth. I've watched most of Da Ali G show and I've seen that movie, and Borat is leaps and bounds better. It takes everything that is hilarious from the show. Of course, they have to take out some of the spontaneity because it has to have SOME sort of a story line, but I loved it.
"Oh, she ran away."
And then you see her head in the fridge? Instant classic :P
I loved it, and this was the first time i ever saw a belgian audio (typically rather reserved) cheer for a movie. I too felt like the previews ruined a good deal of the movie though. I wish i could've un-seen those prior to going to see the movie, as i really didn't need those to convince me to go anyway.
Haha, I guess it was only a matter of time. Anticipation of exactly this kind of thing happening was what prompted me to ask the earlier question about release legalities:

go see it.

I should buy those DVDs.
And see borat.
Don't get me wrong, it had its funny moments - but if you've seen Ali G with the borat clips in it, you'd understand.

Well sounds like there is some bidding wars over the next movie, my girl just shot me this link:
