Yeah, I'm with Sectaurs on the whole elbow fat rolls thing. The pants came out a little lumpy around the crotch/upper thigh area (yes... I was checking out his winky to have noticed this).
Other than that, great looking model so far dude. The hands are looking awesome and I really like the face as well.
Yo Modeling_man. I have watched you work on this piece (yah, I work with the guy)it is coming along real sweet like. You are definitely setting the bar with this.
Here's what i got...not sure how much time, if any, I'll have after this post.
Hair, and skin need some love...no spec work yet. Bracers are literally flat color atm. No bump in the hat...the list goes on and on.
Crits are definitely welcome but please try to keep them in scope with the fact that tomorrow is the end of the deadline.
Thanks!

Sweeeet. I think that it might be better to move the bracelet things further up the arm. The way they are hides the narrow part of the wrist and kinda makes it look like his entire forearm is as thick as a tree trunk. Maybe slide it a bit up the arm and narrow the end that is at the base of the hand.
Thanks for the crits guys! I'm making a list of this stuff so I can just sit down and crank through it all.
Lupus: I'll take a look at the bracers, I kinda of liked the way it made him look like he has tree trunk arms but I can see it getting a bit ackward for posing.
Sectaurs: YOU KNOW IT. Funny how you looked for a treasure trail.
I really hope i can get this guy finished.

This model is great! Love the bear, too. The only crit I can give is that I think it would look even better if you had some alpha mapped planes adding some depth to his chest hair.
Just in case anyone was wondering why I have a polar bear in the redesign, this was the little backstory I had buzzing around in my head while I worked on this:
As the Soviet Union's greatest professional wrestler, Zangief was contacted to demonstrate the Soviet Union's strength to the rest of the world in the second World Warrior tournament.
Zangief patriotically agreed and received fantastic training in the extreme climate of Siberia. Zangief wrestled polar bears in Siberia, on which he practiced his trademark Spinning Piledriver after being picked up by a cyclone while performing a piledriver on a bear. The scars covering his body are said to have been the results of wrestling with bears.
After the fall of Soviet Union Zangief lost everything. His sponsorship, his housing, everything that was given to him by the government he loved so dearly was taken away. Zangief packed up what belongings he had and went back to Siberia to live amongst the polar bears, and live out his life.
Very cool idea and redesign. the model is awesome too!
However, the texturing isn't quite working for me... the boots look great, as does his head and hat, but the torso and arms look like a damaged muscle suit, and the pants are quite boring to look at.
I'm not sure why you went for that scarring (?) pattern on his body, it's really obviously mirrored and doesn't look like any sort of natural damage. They certainly don't look like injuries caused by wrestling with bears - IMHO he'd look a lot better without those scars.
Bears would leave more clawing, ragged wounds, not big sharp areas torn off.
Also I think his flesh would benefit from a bit more specular - it looks almost like rubber at the moment due to lack of it.
Either way, it's a nice model - just the textures need some work and then it'll be perfect!
Nice end result, but I agree with Mop (happening a lot lately). The texturing for his skin/pants/cape is very bland and monochromatic. I know you probably had to bust butt to get it done, but before adding it to the portfolio, I'd try to work out those areas. Get more color variation, more grit in the color map and less in the normal (especially for the skin) and work on those scars. They are way cartoony for the way you approached everything else.
I think overall you used a bit too much nvfilter and not enough geometry modeled. It's flattening the normal effect.
Wow...Mop you clearly never played SF2.
Sorry I disagree with your opinions on the scars they are how the scars were done originally. They define the look of Zangief. I actually looked into how his scars were done. In all the reference the scars are literally mirrored, so I kept them that way. I was going to put a scar over his face I actually put down realistic looking scars and it looked like a typical futuristic marine.
This was not the look i wanted.
Time was clearly an issue I was up against, and I asked for critiques again and again. There isn't any nvfilter being used just a normal map created in max 8.0 and a bump map. I'll take a look at the pants sometime but at this point I'm exhausted.

Yeah, Mop, Ben, the scars he used are the exact scars on the original Zangief:

Yeah , but it's challenge <u>"street fighter - redesign"</u> ,
so I agree with Mop and Poop.
The model will look better & more real without "mirrored scars".
Anyway - it's one of the best model of this challenge !
BRAVO
Scars on the original Zangief were probably mirrored because the sprite was the same one flipped horizontally for when he was facing the other way
I actually have played SF2 (although admittedly not very much, and not recently), but that's by the by - IMHO those scars aren't really "part of the character", and especially the way you worked them into his backstory makes them less believable.
Mirrored and regular as they are, especially in contrast to the fairly realistic (if exaggerated) sculpting style, they just look strange, and certainly not like bear claw wounds.
I'm not saying you should make him look like a "stereotypical scarred marine" (yes, scars over the eyes are clich
Sorry i respect your opinion but I disagree. If I ever decide to redesign it I'll unmirror the arms, but the look of the scars will remain the same.
He just looks like a big nameless brute to me with out them.
The scars immediately read as Zangief and I'm keeping that look. I don't see how my backstory makes the scars any less believable. As for the believability of the character, if he wrestled bears in real life he'd be dead, or his scars would look absolutely disgusting. Being mauled by a bear is not a pretty sight, and not quite what you'd want to see next to a cute little polar bear cub;)
I bet if I changed the scars and made them more "real" people would be telling to me to make them look like the original because it'd suite the character better, and make for a better redesign.

I'm not positive, but at least according to Wikipedia it was written that way in his original backstory:

Ya i just pulled his initial story from wikipedia, no point in rewriting;)
This is my portion of his backstory redesign:
After the fall of Soviet Union Zangief lost everything. His sponsorship, his housing, everything that was given to him by the government he loved so dearly was taken away. Zangief packed up what belongings he had and went back to Siberia to live amongst the polar bears, and live out his life.
This is really cool.
The only thing I could suggest is some pseudo replications around the torso area. But otherwise props to you a job well done.
As for the back story what's his relationship with the bears? Does he love them or constantly rage against them, tearing their razor-clad paws off and beating their snouts in with them like the not so good old days?
I feel it's the question on everyone's mind.

But what on earth did he do to get fat rolls on the inside of his elbows?
hands look awesome.
feet are too low poly. I really shouldn't have to point that out. come on.
I'll take a look at the boots
Thanks!!

Nah great work, Zangief + Polar bears = great idea and geniune re-design
