Lead Character Artist

Job Location: San Francisco, CA

Job Purpose:
Oversees the work of a team of character artists. Partners closely with the Lead Artist and Character TD to address all issues related the creation of run-time game characters. Responsible for setting and maintaining the aesthetic and technical quality bar for the character art team.

Responsibilities:
• Works closely with the Lead Artist to establish the aesthetic and technical standards for character art on the project.
• Makes a significant direct contribution to the creation of character art.
• Leads by example. Demonstrates, communicates and exemplifies clear expectations for quality of work, productivity, communication and professionalism to the team.
• Oversees the work of a team of Character Artists on a daily basis, effectively communicating art direction, as well as delivering constructive feedback to work in progress.
• Partners closely with the Character TD and Lead Animator to deliver an efficient and stable art pipeline.
• Communicates technical guidelines for character art creation and runtime implementation to the team.
• Establishes a well-organized, focused work environment for the character art team.
• Manages, mentors and coaches staff, including writing and delivering annual one-on-one performance evaluations to all direct reports.
• Recognizes and develops talent on the team
• Supervise regular team meetings.
• Works with Art Lead and Production team to set key milestones for the team.
• Resolves timeline and artistic discrepancies promptly and professionally with the Lead Artist and the Production team.
• Maintains and communicates a strong knowledge of innovative game production technologies and the capabilities/limitations of these technologies as they relate to the project goals.
• Significantly contributes to the design of tools used in building run-time characters.
• Problem solves and consistently presents sound solutions to technical issues related to the creation of real-time game characters.
• Works with the team leads and company recruiters to build an outstanding team of Character Artists for the project. This includes participating in the recruiting interviewing and testing of potential new Character Artists.
• Perform special projects as assigned.


Qualifications:

• A reel demonstrating outstanding 3d modeling, texturing skills
• A traditional art portfolio exhibiting exceptional skill in the following areas: sculpting, figure drawing, painting, as well as a demonstrated understanding of human and animal anatomy
• A minimum of four years experience in computer gaming or related field, creating 3d character art.
• A BFA preferred.
• A passion for gaming required.
• Demonstrated expertise working with Maya’s modeling / texturing / lighting tools is required.
• Expertise in the use of software development tools used in the creation character art.
• Good overall understanding of 3D computer graphics (modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering)
• Strong knowledge of character rigging / weighting.
• Prior experience leading a team of artist is strongly preferred.
• A significant contribution as a character artist on at least two games strongly preferred.
• Excel as a team player and strive to maximize team/department performance
• Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of a creative team.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to prioritize one’s own tasks and tasks of others.
• Outstanding coaching and motivational skills
• Must be responsive to deadlines and work well under pressure.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor less experienced artist.
• Must be willing to work overtime.
